Crooks and Liars » Noose hung on Columbia Professor’s door:
" Hundreds of Columbia University teachers and students voiced outrage Wednesday
over a noose found hanging from a black professor’s office door, while police
investigated if it was the work of disgruntled students or a colleague. The
4-foot-long twine noose was found Tuesday on Madonna Constantine’s door at
Teachers College, a graduate school of education affiliated with Columbia. At a
raucous rally Wednesday, Constantine said it was a “blatant act of racism.”"
This is not to condone racist behavior, but to discourage witch hunts. This could be many things, it could be a true racist act, it could be a silly stunt, it could be a personal attack for reasons other than race. The problem is that it isn't clear what it means, and what the motives were. In truth, it could be as simple as someone wanting to get attention, which it has done.
Society has pushed racism out of the main stream of culture, but there is little to nothing that you can do to change peoples minds. It is like those soldiers in the Pacific, who for years after the war was over were attacking people who came onto the island. The war was over, but they never got the message, they didn't understand that they were defeated. Since they felt like they were at war, they wouldn't trust you even if you told them. Racists are the same way, for the most part they have lost the war, even examples like Jenna point to that victory because of the reaction. They either have not, or do not want to understand that their side has failed. You can't reason with them, you can't tell them because they won't trust you. Attacking them only fuels their fears. What is the reaction that should be taken, maybe no reaction, in a case where no one was harmed.
