Pajamas Media: Europe Turns Right

What does this shift in power in Europe mean for global power relationships, key among those relationships being the one between America and Europe. Europe may be embracing ideas that have a history of being promoted in America, but does that make them our friends. Does this mean that they have set aside their anti-American sentiment. Many think that is not the case.

NYT source: Israeli airstrike in Syria may have targeted nuke installations

The middle east is looking like a more dangerous place. This is the first I have heard about Syria gaining nuclear technology, and I would wait until more comes in to even guess about that. There was an attack though, both Israel and Syria confirm it. Most likely target would have been arms that were going to Lebanon for Hezbollah forces there. Hezbollah is like your little brother, every time it gets its ass kicked it goes into hiding. Like your little brother though, there isn't a change of mission. Just a planning an laying low until they are ready to strike again.

Conservation Group Shows Escalating Extinction Crisis

We live on a very small planet, and while I am in no way a Luddite, the environment has to be a concern to us. Some may believe that it doesn't effect us when a species dies, and that may be true that there is no direct effect. There are times in life that you are in a situation where what is legal is different from what is moral. If you see a person drowning in a river, and you can swim out there are help them. There is no legal obligation for you to do so, however you might believe that there is a moral one. I think that the moral responsibility for humynity is to do our best not to destroy the planet and kill off the other species that share this world with us.

Republicans simply do not believe in our democracy - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth

Free Speech means that there are things that you can say, and there are things that you shouldn't say. I do not think that the armed forces are above question, or criticism. They are a part of our democracy as as such they also are subject to Free Speech. What should and should not be said regarding the military is similar to what I believe should and should not be said about others. You have the right to call the president any dirty name in the book. If you want people to respect you, and your opinions though it isn't a good idea to be trashing the president this way. What should be done, is people ideas and values and actions should be questioned. Motivations can be held up to the light to see if they are what we would expect from out leaders. Personal attacks have no positive place in a political conversation. That means calling a general a traitor is just wrong, you have the right to do it, but you shouldn't.

Gingrich calls Petraeus's report "wholly inadequate", eyes campaign - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth:

" I think Newt is exactly what the GOP needs in this presidential campaign. It's
just not crazy enough or far-right enough nor has it properly alienated enough
people so it's about time they find a serious divider who can push the party
over the edge and into a ravine. With all of the leading candidates doing their

'History' Teacher Asks 14-Year-Olds to Renounce U.S. Citizenship NewsBusters.org:

"'Teacher' Mike Brooks is teaching his 14-year-old, middle school children

U.S.A. that he even sent a letter home to his student's parents asking them to
renounce their citizenship in the U.S."

This is a wrong thing for a teacher to do. It isn't the place for a teacher to be making statements like this to his students. It isn't the place of a teacher to compel them to join the armed forces, and it isn't the place of the teacher to compel them to renounce America. Students go to school to receive and education and that should happen in as politically neutral an environment as possible. This is a clear abuse of the power that he hold as a teacher, and he should be fired.

The Strata-Sphere » Blog Archive » Zawahiri Controls al-Qaeda, Bin Laden Sidelined 2 Years:

"Intelligence officials have told The Sunday Telegraph that bin Laden has not
chaired a meeting of al-Qaeda’s ruling shura, or council, in more than two
years. Instead, Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden’s nominal number two, is credited
with rebuilding the terror network since the Afghan war in 2001."

This is actually a really smart idea for Al Qaeda. If Bin Laden gets killed, since he is not the leader, the group still has a strong leader that can rally back. If Zawahiri gets killed, while the group would be without an active leader until Bin Laden stepped in, they would still have the uniting figure head of Bin Laden to rally behind. They know that we have our target on Bin Laden, they are making plans for their survival if we catch or kill him.

that suggests dying in Iraq is a small price.' He said."

There are no small prices in war. That being said, if 100 soldiers die, if a thousand die in Iraq today, to prevent an attack on America that could kill thousands, and wound even more, what costs more. The words that he choose were poorly chosen and he should have expressed himself better. The message that he was trying to put out there, is that the soldiers know that their lives are put on the line to save their country. The country that is worth more to them.

is look at what they said. Nothing has changed since the surge started. Today,
now we learn that 1 million Iraqis have been killed since the war started. A
million. That's pretty hard to comprehend: 3,800 Americans, 30,000 wounded. More
than 2,000 double amputees."

One Million, does he really think that anyone is going to believe him when he pulls numbers like that out of thin air?

Daily Kos: This is the rhetoric I've been looking for

Daily Kos: This is the rhetoric I've been looking for:

"Obama, who had resisted measures to tie money for the war to a deadline for
withdrawal, said Sunday he would no longer support funding measures in the
Senate that do not include deadlines. “We are going to bring an end to this war
and I will fight hard in the United States Senate to make sure we don’t pass any
funding bill that does not have a deadline,” Obama told the crowd. "

This is the wrong choice for America, it is blatantly using the troops as political pawns in his run for the White House. Every day I trust a little bit less of what Obama is telling us. Taking the troops from Iraq would be a mistake, if he weren't being driven so hard by activists on the left he would understand that. The activists on the left, don't want America to fail, they want Bush to fail, they want to be able to say that they were right from the start. If we win in Iraq, they will be wrong, and if there is anything that everyone I have known on the left hates - that is being wrong.

Bush Expected to Name Judge as Gonzales’s Successor - New York Times:

"Unlike Mr. Gonzales, Mr. Mukasey is not a close confidante of the president.
Nor is he a Washington insider. But people in both political parties say he
possesses the two qualities that Mr. Bush has been looking for in a nominee: a
law-and-order sensibility that dovetails with the president’s agenda for the war
on terror, and the potential to avoid a bruising confirmation battle with the
Democrats who now run the Senate."

Imagine where we would be now if he had made choices like this from the beginning. I think that Bush, when he got to be president, thought that he could do what he wanted, when he wanted. He didn't understand that even the most powerful office in the land has to work with congress and world leaders to get things done. I hope that he is a good AG, and that he can put some of this pain behind us.

A Blog For All: What Was Hit In Syria?:

"At a rendezvous point on the ground, a Shaldag air force commando team was
waiting to direct their laser beams at the target for the approaching jets. The
team had arrived a day earlier, taking up position near a large underground
depot. Soon the bunkers were in flames. Ten days after the jets reached home,
their mission was the focus of intense speculation this weekend amid claims that
Israel believed it had destroyed a cache of nuclear materials from North Korea."

Speculation about what was hit in those attacks continue as those who know refuse to say. There has been no word from either the Israelis or the Syrians about what the potential target of that raid was. Rumors of nuclear materials from North Korea and arms going to terrorists in Lebanon continue to be the most talked about suggestions.

celebrity nation: Britney could lose custody Monday morning:

"Britney Spears could lose custody of her two children as early as Monday
morning. LA attorney Gloria Allred is bringing a 'secret' witness to court on
Monday for the custody battle between Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Allred filed a signed declaration from the witness, described only as a man
who's had close observation of Spears's behavior with her kids. The judge in the
closed-hearing case is in possession of the declaration does not have to rule on
it; he can simply read it and enter it into the case's existing papers. The only
way the witness would testify is under cross examination. In other words, the
declaration has already served as testimony. It would only be if Spears's side
decided to question that the witness would be asked to speak. The witness will
be in court with Allread at 8:30 a.m., and could blow the popstar's chances of
keeping Sean Preston and Jayden James. Allred has kept the witness's identity a
'secret' so as not to start a publicity war. But when the declaration was filed
on Friday, Spears and her attorney Laura Wasser would have learned his name.
'You may recognize him as we walk into court,' Allred says of the witness. 'But
maybe not. He is not famous. He's just someone who's concerned about the kids.'"

Alright start the guessing game, who is it? Not someone famous... but someone we might recognize, isn't that a bit of a contrary statement. Does she mean he isn't a celebrity? Is it one of the kids? Maybe one of the body guards, could it be her manny? That is who I think it is. Any guesses.

Greenspan warns on sharp Fed rate cuts: FT - Yahoo! News:

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said his
successors at the U.S. central bank should act cautiously in lowering interest
rates because of inflation risks, according to an interview published on Sunday.
Greenspan said the Fed should be careful not to cut rates too aggressively
because the risk of an 'inflationary resurgence' is greater now than when he was
chairman, the Financial Times reported."

I wonder if the new Fed governors are wishing that Greenspan would just go away. He does have sound advice though. Any cuts right now could create a deeper crisis when the housing market goes into a slump. The housing market will sink, everything does. The only question is how much of a crisis it is going to be. Keeping interest rates high and giving help to those who can make their payments with assistance, while allowing others to sink is the best plan.

eat animal droppings and taunted with a racial slur."

Give them all the death penalty. They don't have to prove that someone did anything to harm the girl, just that they did nothing to help her when they saw what was going on. None of them went for help, which they clearly could have done If the person who sent the report to police is found to be one of the house members, give that person a break. Otherwise, put them all on death row. Or they could release them into the general population and they will be dead within a matter of days.

project that aims to reduce the dangers of nuclear proliferation and control
radioactive waste, while acknowledging that they were far from achieving such
goals. At issue is the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, under which a limited
number of countries, including the U.S. and Russia would provide uranium fuel to
other nations and then retrieve it for reprocessing."

This sounds like a solid idea, to keep materials in places where they can be kept safe. There are a number of governments that just don't have the technology or the strength to keep the nuclear material safe. The problem of course is that it is asking for the nations involved to trust that America and other nations that are a part of the process are not going to manipulate this power unfairly for their own ends. There needs to be strong UN over sight of the process, and the involvement of enough nations to assure everyone a source they can trust.

This is a strong sign that the crisis with Iran is not going to devolve into the same crisis that Iraq has fallen into. I think that if global opinion, and key nations had been more united against Saddam, the war in Iraq would have either never happened or been a much different and far more successful battle. That lack is on the presidents shoulders as much as it is the leaders of other key nations. The president did not show a willingness to work with others.

I think there is no more sure sign that a person is an idiot than the fact that they have their pants around their knees and their underwear visible for the world to see. That being said, it bothers me to hear talk about regulating how people dress. Why would you want them to dress like anything else than what they are, losers. At least they are marking themselves out, so that they are easier to keep an eye on.

Marginal Revolution: The Ku Klux Klan:

"The Ku Klux Klan reached its heyday in the mid-1920s, claiming millions of
members. In this paper, we analyze the 1920s Klan, those who joined it, and the
social and political impact that it had. We utilize a wide range of newly
discovered data sources including information from Klan membership roles,
applications, robe-order forms, an internal audit of the Klan by Ernst and
Ernst, and a census that the Klan conducted after an internal scandal. Combining
these sources with data from the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, we find that
individuals who joined the Klan were better educated and more likely to hold
professional jobs than the typical American. Surprisingly, we find few tangible
social or political impacts of the Klan. There is little evidence that the Klan
had an effect on black or foreign born residential mobility, or on lynching
patterns. Historians have argued that the Klan was successful in getting
candidates they favored elected. Statistical analysis, however, suggests that
any direct impact of the Klan was likely to be small. Furthermore, those who
were elected had little discernible effect on legislation passed. Rather than a
terrorist organization, the 1920s Klan is best described as a social
organization built through a wildly successful pyramid scheme fueled by an army
of highly-incentivized sales agents selling hatred, religious intolerance, and
fraternity in a time and place where there was tremendous demand."

Could it be that the Klan is a scarier force looking backwards in history than it actually was at the time of its existence. It would be interesting if you could uncover if their racist ideas were more powerful as a means of empowering those who have fought for equality or as a force of racism in this country.

This is just funny to think about, he might actually be a worse dancer than Britney. I hope that Simon is on hand to comment as Ryan stumbles around the stage trying to sing.

Gabby Babble: Lindsay Lohan is Quitting Hollwood?

Gabby Babble: Lindsay Lohan is Quitting Hollwood?:

""When we finally came face to face we just clung on to each other and did not
stop crying for at least half an hour. Lindsay said, ‘Daddy, I have done some
terrible things and been addicted to drugs but please believe me I will never do
drugs again’. She assured me she has given drugs up for good. And when I looked
into her eyes I 100% believed her. She said she does not want to live in
Hollywood as that is where this evil in her life happens. She said, ‘I hate
Hollywood and I don’t want to work there. I need a break and I am moving
away’.”"

There are two reasons to not believe this is true, at least reasons I don't believe it.

1) Is this is coming from her media whore father.

2) I just don't want to believe that our Lindsay would be leaving us. Take a break Lindsay, get well but don't forget your fans will be waiting for you. Moving won't change, getting new friends doesn't help, it you make friends with the same kind of people. They are every where.

The Jews boast that they killed Jesus, but “they slew him not nor crucified him,
but it appeared so unto them” (v. 157). Ibn Kathir explains: “When Allah sent
‘Isa [Jesus] with proofs and guidance, the Jews, may Allah’s curses, anger,
torment and punishment be upon them, envied him because of his prophethood and
obvious miracles…” They stirred up “the king of Damascus at that time, a Greek
polytheist who worshipped the stars” to order his deputy in Jerusalem to arrest
Jesus. Jesus, perceiving this, asked those with him, “Who volunteers to be made
to look like me, for which he will be my companion in Paradise?” A young man
volunteered, whereupon “Allah made the young man look exactly like ‘Isa, while a
hole opened in the roof of the house, and ‘Isa was made to sleep and ascended to
heaven while asleep.” Then “those surrounding the house saw the man who looked
like ‘Isa, they thought that he was ‘Isa. So they took him at night, crucified
him and placed a crown of thorns on his head. The Jews then boasted that they
killed ‘Isa and some Christians accepted their false claim, due to their
ignorance and lack of reason.” Other sources offer other theories: Wahb bin
Munabbah, Qatadah, and Mujahid say that Jesus was with seventy of his disciples
when the guards came to arrest him, and all seventy were made to look just like
Jesus; one stepped forward and was crucified. The Ruhul Ma’ani identifies the
one who was made to look like Jesus and crucified as the one who betrayed him
for thirty dirhams — Judas. Allama Baghawi says it was a sentry who was guarding
Jesus after his arrest.
The assertion that “there is none of the People of the Book but must believe in him before his death” has been taken to mean that Jesus will return to earth – and when he does, according to Muhammad, he will “break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government).” That is, he will abolish the subservient dhimmi status of the non-Muslims, and Islamize the
world: “During his time, Allah will destroy all religions except Islam and Allah
will destroy Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal (the False Messiah).”

There are a few things in this that caught my interest. One is that they don't believe that Jesus was killed on the cross. That god was able to put a decoy in his place, and that person was killed on the cross. If you believe in god, like the Christians and the Muslims do, there is nothing that would put this above gods power. If he can bring Jesus back from the dead, he can make another person look like Jesus to trick those who would kill him.

The second is that the end of days for Muslims sounds a whole lot like the end of days for Christians. Jesus comes back, check. Establish his reign on earth, check. The only religion that will remain will be their religion - of course Christians say it will be Christianity and Muslims say Islam.
