Calif. man accused of stabbing sea lion - Yahoo! News:

"LOS ANGELES - A fisherman accused of stabbing a sea lion with a steak

federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. "

But officer, it stole my bait, I had to stab it with my knife.

ABC News: 9-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Baby Beating:

"An 11-month-old boy was fatally beaten at a home day center, and
authorities have charged a 9-year-old boy also attending the day care with the
death and the center's owner with putting the child in harm's way. Authorities
said the older boy repeatedly hit Tahir Francis in the head a week ago, causing
skull fractures. Tahir was taken to a hospital and died about six hours later
while undergoing surgery."

I don't know how a 9-year-old boy knows that he can kill, and even less what would make him want to kill. This is all probably a very sad mistake. The people who should be looked at are the parents and the adults at the day care.

Quoted / Jossip:

"If CBS were as proud of Kid Nation as the network would have us believe,
then why were such pains taken to shoot in secrecy, and do it in a state that
did not protect children on show-biz sets, and in such a way that guild rules
didn’t apply? Moonves should lift the gag orders on the 40 children and their
parents who signed a 22-page agreement in which a strict confidentiality clause
prohibits disclosure of information about the show and contact with the media
over the next three years. If violated, a $5 million penalty is levied. I say,
if CBS has nothing to hide, then let everyone involved talk freely.–Nikki Finke,
commending the New York Times"

The whole thing is dirty, the more you know about it, the worse it sounds. This show is not going to do well for the network, and it should be pulled. The network is going to attempt to run it and make some of the money production money back. I don't think that is going to happen, viewers will not watch it, and advertisers will begin to pull out.

Friday as firefighters doused most of the huge wildfires that ravaged the Greek

It is good to see this sad mess come to an end. Now begins the sadness of what has been lost and what needs to be rebuilt.

Michelle Malkin » Federal judge blocks tougher penalties for illegal-alien hiring

Michelle Malkin » Federal judge blocks tougher penalties for illegal-alien hiring:

"Oh, crikey. A San Francisco federal judge appointed by guess-who interferes
with stiffer employer sanctions for businesses that knowingly hire illegal
aliens because she says she needs more “breathing room:”"

There is a saying that one bad apple will ruin the bunch, when it comes to employers who hire illegal workers the whole bunch is bad. They are starting off breaking the law, and knowing it. I always have my doubts about people who are willing to break the law in this manner. They are not breaking the law because they want to help the poor immigrants - ok maybe a few are. Employers break the law because they want to save money by not paying what they would have to pay legal workers. Worst of all, they do it because they don't want to extend to them the rights that they would have to give to legal workers. Employers of illegals abuse their workers, and there is nothing that can be done about it, sometimes they don't even pay the workers.

They abuse the workers, and encourage the immigrants to break the law by coming here, and are the engine behind the biggest domestic crisis our country faces right now. I don't think you can punish them too harshly.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Three GOP candidates considering Tommy Franks for VP?:

"I don’t know what’s more alarming, the fact that they’re so dim to public
sentiment about the war that they’d consider putting one of its architects on
the ticket or the fact that they think Texas might be in play next year and need
him as an insurance policy. Surely also-rans like Brownback and Hunter aren’t so
far in denial about their chances that they’d be thinking about running mates,
so it’s got to be three of these five: Rudy, Romney, McCain, Fred, and Huckabee.
Probably the first three, just because they’re suspect for one reason or another
among conservatives and could use some of Franks’s deep red state appeal."

You know your idea is bad when the cheerleader of the right - but she dances like Elaine - is telling you that it is stupid. Right now the Iraq war is almost universally unpopular. Placing a person who was such a key part of the Iraq war will turn off voters. It will also turn off voters, because I think that they are looking for a stronger president than vice president, Franks would be an echo of Cheney in some voters minds.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Reid: Hey, maybe we don’t need a withdrawal deadline after all

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Reid: Hey, maybe we don’t need a withdrawal deadline after all:

"At one point, as [Reps.] Moran, Tauscher and Rep. Jon Porter (R-Nev.) were
heading to lunch in the fortified Green Zone, an American urgently tried to get
their attention, apparently to voice concerns about the war effort, the
participants said. Security whisked the man away before he could make his
point…But even such tight control could not always filter out the bizarre world
inside the barricades. At one point, the three were trying to discuss the state
of Iraqi security forces with Iraq’s national security adviser, Mowaffak
al-Rubaie, but the large, flat-panel television set facing the official proved
to be a distraction. Rubaie was watching children’s cartoons. When Moran asked
him to turn it off, Rubaie protested with a laugh and said, “But this is my
favorite television show,” Moran recalled."

This doesn't give one a lot to be encouraged about when it comes to the future of Iraq. Cartoons should not be more important than meeting with American Congressional leaders. This is a trivial story in some ways, but at the root of it, it expresses a lack of concern about government by at least this Iraqi leader. He should be relieved of his duty to allow him more time to watch cartoons.

Gates of Vienna: Swedish Flags are Burning:

"Demonstrators in Lahore, Pakistan, burn the Swedish flag today in protest
against the publication of a drawing of Mohammed."

Not again, I strongly believe a number of things related to this issue. The first of all is that we should be sensitive to each others religious beliefs. Second is that the free expression of ideas is the most important freedom that we have as people. Third and most importantly, we cannot allow teenagers with matches and loud voices on the Arab street to control the media of the west. Honestly they shouldn't even be able to control the media of their own countries - let the adults in their countries do that.

Crooks and Liars » Richardson: Get specific on Iraq

Crooks and Liars » Richardson: Get specific on Iraq:

"In the most recent debate, [Richardson] asked the other major candidates a
clear question: how many troops would you leave behind and for how long? We have
yet to hear an answer. All the major Democratic candidates say they are eager to
end this war, and they all say they don’t believe there is a military solution
in Iraq. Why, then, do they maintain that we must leave an indefinite number of
troops behind for an indeterminate amount of time to work hopelessly towards a
military solution everyone says doesn’t exist?"

The war in Iraq is the key difference that I have with Richardson, and the reason why I can't vote for him. He doesn't seem to understand that you can't just end the war, and take all the troops home in the time that he has put on the table. The war was a mistake from the beginning because of the way it was launched and planned. We are where we are though, and the country is moving slowly towards success - it would be immoral to leave now.

Crooks and Liars » FOXNews Attacks Single Mom Katie Couric For Going To Iraq

Crooks and Liars » FOXNews Attacks Single Mom Katie Couric For Going To Iraq:

"As ThinkProgress reported today, Fox News attacked CBS rival and single mother
Katie Couric for her upcoming trip to Iraq. But while Neil Cavuto, John Gibson
and the gang at Fox grew hysterical about Couric, they remained silent about 26
year old Michelle Ring and other single mothers fighting for the United States
in Iraq. The issue for Fox, of course, is that anyone else’s coverage of Iraq
inevitably brings the facts of Bush’s Baghdad fiasco directly to American
television screens. But in a new low even for Fox, Couric (whose husband passed
away from colon cancer in 1998) was accused of placing her children at risk all
in the name of ratings."

Are these people insane, how do they expect anyone is going to think they are not a joke.

an airport men’s room, Republican officials said Friday. Craig's communications
director Dan Whiting told the Idaho Statesman, 'I won't say either way.'"

Ooops, I posted the other day that he had quit. Well it was a good and clear choice then, and it is a good and clear choice now. There is no official work from the senator, but I don't see how it can end any other way.

"'I believe that there are millions of Americans who know that our security and
prosperity are at risk if we don't address the challenges of our time,' Thompson
said in a statement. The formal announcement will come in a webcast on September
6, followed by a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. A second leg
will hit Florida and wind up at home in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, on September
15. 'We enter this campaign in a strong position,' said campaign manager Bill
Lacy. 'Fred is consistently near the top in the polls, and conservatives across
the country have put together the closest thing to a draft in recent
presidential campaign history in an effort to bring about this day.' But
Thompson's long-delayed formal entry had made some supporters anxious and
sparked complaints he was violating Federal Election Commission laws by running
a shadow campaign."

I was wrong, he is in the race.

Reid Ready To Haggle With Antiwar Republicans | Air America Radio

Reid Ready To Haggle With Antiwar Republicans Air America Radio:

"After not being able to persuade the Republicans to agree with Reid’s proposal
for a springtime troop withdrawal, Senator Harry Reid said he will compromise
with them. Reid said, 'I don't think we have to think that our way is the only
way. I'm not saying, 'Republicans, do what we want to do.' Just give me
something that you think you would like to do, that accomplishes some or all of
what I want to do.'"

I am against congress stepping into the war process, but I think what is more important is the congressional process. What I mean by that is that Democrats and Republicans need to start working together again to get things done. There must be some ground that can be found that is shared between the parties. There must be a meeting point that will address the concerns of both parties. While some on the left will accuse him of selling out, what Reid is doing is important for our democracy.

easy for him because he's still hot!"

First of all, Becks has to take care of his health. It is true that he has only played a couple games, but if he doesn't take care of his health then he will be out of the game either for the rest of the season, or forever. As for another kid, it would be great to see them have more kids.

FOXNews.com - Iowa Judge Issues Stay on Own Gay Marriage Ruling - Politics Republican Party Democratic Party Political Spectrum:

"Judge Robert Hanson said he issued the stay about noon. Earlier, he had told
the county attorney to instruct the Polk County recorder to stop accepting
same-sex marriage applications. By the time Recorder Julie Haggerty stopped
taking applications around 11 a.m., her office had accepted 21 applications."

Now the real battle begins. I think that Iowa could be the tipping point for granting rights for homosexuals to marry. When states like Mass. grant similar rights to homosexuals it almost makes it harder for other states to follow suit. Mass. has such a strong reputation as being liberal that to follow its example it to invite the an attack from the right of following the an extremist agenda. However when a state like Iowa changes sides, it makes it easier for other states to follow its example, because Iowa is not know to be liberal.

I know this is a joke, but I think that this is real concern that many people have regarding her run for the White House. While there are many people who loved Clinton when he was president, there are also a lot of people that remember the Clinton administration for its troubles, and don't want to repeat those problems. This is something that Hilary should have stared further away from, and shouldn't be joking about.

What is this reality TV, why is Ashley playing herself? No, thats not fair, the Olsen sisters actually have a pretty good record on the Hollywood dating scene - good meaning that they don't serial date. It is shockingly easy to be a celebrity these days. You work for Britney Spears, you join her for a swim in your underwear, you have lesbian sex with her - oh well that part might not be easy. Funk is a passing trend though, and I almost feel bad for her, she is what I would call an E list celebrity and their expiration dates come fast. they watched the clubgoers making their way home. Unfortunately for Cohen and
his crew, service was a little slow last night - despite waiting for hours (and
passing the time by smoking cigarettes by the dozen), the team eventually packed
up and left without handing anyone any papers. The big question, then: just who
do you think they were at Area to serve?"

While I have no idea who they were planning on serving it did get me to thinking. Who would be next, who is a famous person, who was friends with Britney for a while, and with her and the kids at least a couple of times. A person who would make this drama even more intense by being served. Could it be that they are planing on serving Paris Hilton with papers? That could make this whole mess so big that it would collapse under its own weight. She has had a friendship with Britney, and as far as I know she has not been served yet.

Taliban have been released, and insurgents have vowed they will abduct more
foreigners. 'We will do the same thing with the other allies in Afghanistan,
because we found this way to be successful,' Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef

Besides the clear suffering of the victims, this is going to hurt the people of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a country that needs the help of the international community very much right now. Actions like this are going to make it harder to get organizations and people to come that are willing to help. They are not going to chase the American army out by chasing out aid workers. They are attacking people who come to help them, there is no honor in that.

Media Matters - Buchanan, Scarborough claimed that a military strike against Iran would be popular, but polls suggest otherwise:

"Summary: On MSNBC, Pat Buchanan claimed that a U.S. attack on Iran is
'comin[g]' and went on to assert that a military strike against Iran would be 'a
very popular initial move.' Joe Scarborough agreed, stating that 'a military
strike against Iran initially would be extraordinarily popular with the American
people.' But polling data show that most Americans say they would oppose an
attack on Iran. Summary: On MSNBC, Pat Buchanan claimed that a U.S. attack on

I don't think that Americans ever think of wars as being popular. Paris Hilton is popular, Britney Spears is popular. There is something wrong about calling a war popular, most of all a war that would be as disastrous as a war with Iran.

Edwards On Track in Iowa - TIME

Edwards On Track in Iowa - TIME:

"John Edwards is betting that a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses will
catapult him into national contention, and so far his strategy in the state is
on track. A new TIME poll of likely Iowa caucus goers, taken a week after
Edwards' seven-day, 31-stop bus tour of the state, gives Edwards 29% of the
vote, five points ahead of Hillary Clinton and seven ahead of Barack Obama. This
latest TIME Poll of 519 likely Iowa Democratic caucus goers finds that, among
the so-called 'second-tier' candidates, Bill Richardson has 11%, with Joe Biden
at 5%, Dennis Kucinich with 2%, and Chris Dodd at 1%. (The Poll was conducted
August 22 25, 2007. The margin of error is approximately +/- 5 percentage
points.) "

I really hope that Edwards doesn't win the nomination. I don't think that he will win the general election. Americans don't buy the concept of class warfare, it has never worked, and it is one of the key strategies of his campaign. Edwards doesn't carry himself life a president, he doesn't have a connection to Americans that allows them to trust him as president.

Watching Those We Chose: Gonzo is still under the gun

Watching Those We Chose: Gonzo is still under the gun:

"In a letter today to Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), Fine said his office
'has ongoing investigations' related to Gonzales's testimony on several key
issues, including the prosecutor firings and allegations of improper hiring; the
National Security Agency's Terrorist Surveillance Program; the FBI's use of
national security letters; and allegations that Gonzales sought to improperly
influence a witness who was under investigation by Congress and the Justice
Department. Gonzales's often contradictory remarks and his repeated assertions
that he could not recall key events drew fire from lawmakers of both parties and
contributed to his dwindling support on Capitol Hill."

Sounds like Gonzales might be out of his job, but he isn't out of trouble yet. There are some who have assumed that he took the step to resign knowing that an investigation being launched inside the justice department was getting close to putting him in a corner.

Obama to Donate Funds From Norman Hsu - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime:

"A spokesman for Senator Barack Obama, the Illinois Democrat who is a rival
of Mrs. Clinton for the party’s presidential nomination, said Mr. Obama intended
to give away $7,000 that Mr. Hsu contributed to his committees."

Similar to the move taken by Clinton, this is the right choice for Obama to make. It is even more important that he take this step in regards to the fact that Clinton steeped back from the donation. Clinton still has to explain that little green house in San Francisco, and the money that is reported to have come from people who lived there.

Is Sen. Craig being treated differently than Sen Vitter because of the homosexual nature of his crime. Is a crime that involves womyn more acceptable to Republicans. When listening to the statements that Craig has made, his focus is more on his not being gay, than the fact he was soliciting for sex.

DeLay Schools Lauer on MSM Bias: 'Amazing Double-Standard' | NewsBusters.org

DeLay Schools Lauer on MSM Bias: 'Amazing Double-Standard' NewsBusters.org:

"MATT LAUER: By all accounts these are some tough times for the Republican
party. Last fall Democrats took control of both houses of congress, largely
because of opposition to the war in Iraq. In 2006 the Republican party was also
hit with distracting scandals involving Congressman Mark Foley's inappropriate
emails to male congressional pages and lobbyist Jack Abramoff's corruption case
that brought down several prominent Republican congressmen. This year the phone
number of Republican senator David Vitter turned up in the records of a
Washington, DC escort service, and now recent polls show voters prefer a
Democrat over a Republican by 51-27% and at least one poll found the most
popular choice among Republican presidential candidates is 'none of the above.'
The question now is can any of the damage be reversed? Former House Majority
Leader Tom DeLay served in congress for 22 years and knows personally how
scandals can impact a party. He's also the author of a new book called No
Retreat, No Surrender: One American's Fight. Tom DeLay, congressman, good
morning. TOM DELAY: Good morning, Matt. LAUER: So I went through a litany there,
and maybe I should start by stepping back. We've got two members out of 49
Republican senators in office right now embroiled in controversy. So do we have
a party embroiled in scandal or do we have two bad apples?"

Tom Delay claimed that this question was biased and attacked Matt for the media being biased against the conservatives. This sounds like a tough but fair question to me.

CNN's host Glenn Beck says New Orleans should not be rebuilt - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth

CNN's host Glenn Beck says New Orleans should not be rebuilt - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth

Now, the levees were designed to protect New Orleans. They were tragically
under-engineered, and they still are. Even as we speak, the city continues to
literally sink towards the seafloor. The protection of the Mississippi Delta
continues to wash away with the delta itself. It is disappearing by 25 to 30
square miles, an area the size of Manhattan, each and every year. That means
that over two more acres will be gone by the time tonight`s show is over. So
tonight, here`s what you need to know. President Bush can propose to pledge
another $1 billion or hundred gazillion dollars into rebuilding New Orleans. It
doesn`t matter. You can`t change New Orleans` doomed geography. As hard as it
may be hard to say, or maybe for you to hear, the Big Easy is a lost cause. And
we`re throwing good money after bad.And more importantly, we`re sending people
back into a water hole death trap. That`s what New Orleans is. And it is as
foolish as those misguided people in Malibu who continue to rebuild their homes
on sliding mountains of mud. At the end of the day, Mother Nature always wins.
Now, the private sector, you know, if you want to go ahead and put New Orleans
back together and risk your life in that process, none of my business. But when
a dope like Mayor Ray Nagin wants to ship the poorest of the poor back into
harm`s way and says we need to do it with my tax dollars and your tax dollars,
it`s all my business. I`m all for compassion, but I`m out of tolerance for
stupidity. Now, it would be different if New Orleans were being built
bulletproof for a Category 5 hurricane, like the one that just rocked Mexico
just a week ago. But it`s not. New Orleans, the new levees, would be lucky to
weather another Category 3, the exact same storm that destroyed it two years ago
today.

I actually think that there is good reason to not rebuild the whole city. There are areas of the city that were in a position of such inherent danger that there is little if anything that can be done to make them safe. New Orleans amounts to being a very big sand bar, some of which lays under sea level. It doesn't make sense to me to build on such a foundation. Offer people who lost their homes funds to help them relocate. I know that some will talk about wanting to go back to their homes, and if they want to do that they should be able to. If they want to pay for it themselves.

As expected, Petraeus sees progress -- just like Bush - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth

As expected, Petraeus sees progress -- just like Bush - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth:

"The U.S. troop surge in Iraq has thrown al Qaeda off balance and led to a
reduction in sectarian violence and bombings, the U.S. commander in Iraq was
quoted on Friday by an Australian newspaper as saying. 'We say we have achieved
progress, and we are obviously going to do everything we can to build on that
progress and we believe al Qaeda is off balance at the very least,' General
David Petraeus told the Australian in an interview after briefing Australia's
defense minister, Brendan Nelson, in Baghdad. Petraeus and U.S. ambassador Ryan
Crocker will testify before the U.S. Congress on either September 11 or 12."

I think that there are solid reasons to believe that there is some success that is taking place in Iraq right now. There is no doubt much more progress that will be needed down the road though. I also think that there are some who are determined to not see the progress in Iraq.

A Blog For All: Why The Delay?

A Blog For All: Why The Delay?:

"There are numerous reports today that people working at the UN discovered
vials of phosgene gas while cleaning the offices of UNMOVIC. The workers,
members of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, were
wrapping up operations in their offices, when they came across a number of
vials, which turned out to be phosgene suspended in oil. Phosgene is a choking
agent and is properly considered a chemical weapon, not a nerve agent as the ABC
News story reported."

I am sure we will be hearing more about this in the days to come. I want to know what it was doing there and what was its purpose. It isn't something I think we should be concerned about in the way that I know some on the right will claim. Is it part of plot to over throw the US government and implement UN rule, I doubt it. This should be looked into though.

Same-sex couples can marry, Iowa court rules

(CNN) -- An Iowa district court ruled Thursday that same-sex couples can marry
based on the state constitution's guarantee of equal treatment, court documents
show.
The ruling was in response to a December 2005 lawsuit brought by six
same-sex couples seeking to wed. They were denied marriage licenses and claimed
such treatment violates equal-protection and due-process clauses in the Iowa
constitution.

Another step in the process towards equal rights for homosexuals. It is a little bit of a shock that this came from Iowa, which is not known as being a bastion of liberal thought.

Historic fall in home prices

Historic fall in home prices

A historic decline in home values comes down to this: Even if you never signed
papers on a risky loan during the real estate frenzy, you may now be paying a
price. In recent decades, it has been uncommon for US home prices to fall
much, even during recessions. One government measure has never shown a
year-over-year decline in its three-decade history.

This is bad news for those who own homes right now, because they might lose value. It is good news for those who are looking for a house though. It is an healthy thing for the economy, the housing bubble was becoming a risky, it was either going to deflate slowly or bust.

Sensor rise powers life recorders

Sensor rise powers life recorders

A person's entire life from birth to death could one day be recorded by a
network of intelligent sensors, according to a senior scientist.
By 2057, Martin Sadler of PC firm Hewlett Packard, said there could be at least 1m
devices for every UK resident.

With the increase of data collection, comes a glut of data that needs to be processed, stored and understood. One of the reasons that I think that this is of little concern is that in an ocean of data, the data of one person is so hard to find that there would need to be a solid reason to search for that data.

NBC Refuses to Air Ads Supporting Iraq War Funding

NBC Refuses to Air Ads Supporting Iraq War Funding

I have a very important mission for all of you. Our good friend’s at Freedom’s
Watch are running a $15 million ad buy calling on the American public to tell
members of Congress to support full funding of the war in Iraq. These ads are
extremely powerful testimonials from veterans and their family members, some of
whom lost loved ones in the war. Naturally, the mainstream media is criticizing
the conservative organization for their message and their successful fundraising
for this project, and I guess that’s to be expected. But instead of simply
reporting on the issue at hand, NBC is outright refusing to air these pro-Iraq
war ads on MSNBC or CNBC.

The station has the right to refuse to run the ads as long as it is not running ads against the war. I am not sure that is the case or not. I understand the concern that is being voiced by this group, and I think that NBC is taking the wrong step in this. While the station could argue that they are attempting to stay out of a heated political debate, that is a weak argument. MSNBC runs Count Down with Keith Olbermann, a show that has consistently been against Bush and the war. Again the station has the right to run that show, and I support Olbermann's right to have the kind of news show that he wants.

In the end this is the wrong move because Americans are going to wonder, if this is being blocked from the air, what else is being blocked?

ABC News: Cops Busted by Own Tapes:

"From shootouts caught by dashboard cameras to high-speed chases,
police confrontations caught on video are a huge spectator sport on the Web.
Originally, these videos were meant to help prosecute criminals, but now that
the public can view them with a single click, police are beginning to realize
that anyone can become judge and jury in just an instant — even the police
themselves."

While this might not be popular with some cops, I think that this is good for the public. One it gives them a window into the daily struggles that police officers face. It also gives them a way to see for themselves the actions that police are taking to protect them. Both actions that are heroic and actions that are far less so. While I understand that it means more stress for the officers, it even helps them in some cases. If a suspect claims to have been beaten in custody, but in on camera attacking on officer it helps to defeat the suspects claim.
