Iowa GOP Straw Poll Post Mortem - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth:
Does a low turn out for republicans in the Iowa straw poll mean that there might also be a low turnout for Republicans in the general election. A low Republican turnout would increase the odds for the Democrats. It isn't unusual for people to stay home when they don't have someone they believe in, and the Republicans aren't happy with their choices.
"So, the first real test of the 2008 Presidential campaign came and
went in Ames, Iowa. And what did we really learn? Is Romney the new frontrunner?
Not really. He allegedly spent a ton of money to outpace Huckabee and Brownback.
I know he's supposed to be an excellent business man, but I'm not sure he's
making good investments. No, what we really learned this past weekend is that
the GOP is depressed. The turnout in Iowa for this straw poll was pathetic, much
worse than the last competitive primary in 1999. This is good news for the
Democratic nominee, as long as they don't screw it up:"

American Thinker: The Shape of a Hillary-Rudy Race:
This would be the New York Sentate race all over again. Which would make Hilary happy because she won that election - to be fair she won after Rudy dropped out. It would make Rudy happy because he did drop out of the race, and this would give him a second chance to beat her. What are their strengths and weaknesses?
Rudy is going to talk about the former Clinton administration and how they did so little in his belief to stop terror. He is going to claim that a vote for Hilary is a vote for a defeat in Iraq and a vote to scale back the war on terror. Hilary has a strong position in an area that would normally be a weakness. Rudy can't attack Bill Clinton for his relationships in the White House, because he has his own morally fallen past that is very well known. Hilary is going to paint him as a vote for continuation of the policy and the nature of government that we have had under Bush. Rudy has a strong style of government, and Hilary is going to use his record against him.
Rudy is weak because I think many conservatives don't believe he stands for their ideas. He has a weak stand on guns, which he is trying to strengthen. His stand on gay rights, though he is attempting to inch rightward, is still right of where many want it to be. He is openly pro-choice is a party that has had as one of its foundations a pro-life ideology. I think that many voters on the right won't see that there is a difference between Rudy and Hilary and choose to stay home. For Hilary her weakness is that she has been in the White House before, it is going to be asked if she can really bring change to the country.
"Current national polls show both Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani
with solid leads for their respective party's nominations. Clinton holds about a
20% lead over Barack Obama in national polls , and is rated by London
odds-makers a near 60% probability to be nominated. Obama has faded a bit as a
serious contender despite his early fund-raising success, following a series of
what appeared to many to be naïve and contradictory statements on foreign policy
issues. Giuliani's lead for the GOP nomination over still unannounced candidate
Fred Thompson has grown to about 10% in recent weeks."

Daily Kos: Swift-boating Giuliani?:
What do you think, do you think the attacks are swift boating? I don't know, they are clearly political, and they get stronger the better he does in the polls, but does that make them political. I would argue that many people made mistakes on 9/11 and it appears to be that Giuliani is the only one who is getting attacked. On the other hand, if the claims are true, isn't this something you would want to know about a man who wants to be the most powerful person in the world?
"Uh, Newsweek editors, substantive criticism of Rudy's 9/11 performance is not
'swift-boating.' This is precisely the line that the Rudy campaign wants you to
take. Its argument has been that critics of Rudy's Masterfully Churchillian
Performance, in particular the International Association of Firefighters, are
thoroughly political and even 'partisan.' This is amusing, since IAFF's New York
locals repeatedly endorsed...Rudy Giuliani for Mayor. To describe this as
'swift-boating' -- with its implication that the criticism is political and
partisan, not to mention an unfair attack on his actual record -- tells the
story exactly the way Rudy wants you to. "

This isn't breaking news, of course they are after money and it is a good thing that they are. Do you think that people would drill for the oil that we need to keep our economy moving just for the fun of it? While I can hear you saying that they shouldn't be drilling for oil, that is well and good, but until a real substitute comes along we need it.
What this little essay is missing is the role in the free market of the consumer. It is true that if the consumers are stupid enough to pay richly for cheap food, that is what they are going to get. The problem of course is that the restaurant next door will try and charge a little less, so they have the choice to make. If you want quality food, shop where you know they serve quality. If you want companies to give their workers health care, shop at places that do.
I am going to add another idea to this. We are also workers. If we are at a company that is not treating us right, we have the right to find a job with a company that will. In the market of labor, if the good workers insist on being treated well for their services by choosing to only work for companies that do. More companies will have to respond with better treatment for employees to retain strong workers.
"McDonald's and Exxon-Mobil exist for exactly the same purpose. Yes, one of them
sells billions of hamburgers, while the other pumps billions of barrels of oil,
but grease is not the common interest they share. It's money. McDonald's
Corporation exists to make money, not McRibs. If the corporation thinks it can
make more money by making high quality burgers at a high price, it will do that.
If it can make more money by making low quality burgers at a low price, it will
do that. And if they can get away with making low quality burgers at a high
price, they will do that -- with great joy."

"Back in 2001, Republican activist Linda Chavez was Bush’s first choice to serve
as Secretary of Labor, looking out for the interests of working people
nationwide. She ran into a little trouble when the White House learned that
Chavez failed tell the Bush gang about housing a Guatemalan woman whom she hired illegally to clean her house, and then encouraged a neighbor not to talk about
the cleaning woman to the FBI when agents asked questions during her background
check. Oops. But never fear, this was a temporary setback for Chavez, who has
built a successful network of political action committees. The problem, as the

don’t appear to do anything — except raise money."

Atlas Shrugs: Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t:
Some claims from a new book that is bound to be controversial. Is Islam a religion of peace, and even if it isn't, can it be practiced in a peaceful manner that respects the rights of others.
"-Christianity and Islam have neither similar traditions nor modern
realities—Christian religious violence, real or imagined, does not at all
mitigate the reality of the jihad.
-A “Christian theocracy” is not exactly a credible threat to the American government.
-Most Muslims actually do not condemn jihad.
-The Koran does not invite interpretation, and Muslim leaders
refuse to discuss how to fit their beliefs into modern society.
-Political differences and unwanted international interference are not, in fact, the cause of the turmoil in Iraq and Middle Eastern antagonism toward the West."

Should he keep his seat, that is between him and his god, or his voters.
"Embattled state Rep. Bob Allen, who has been vilified by computer bloggers and
lampooned on late-night talk shows since his arrest on a charge of soliciting
prostitution, is not a criminal or a racist and has no plans to resign, his
attorney said Wednesday. 'Based on the police officer's own report, this case
should be dismissed,' said attorney Greg Eisenmenger, adding that he would file
a motion for dismissal. 'The officer did all the soliciting.' ...Allen,
R-Merritt Island, told investigators he was just playing along when the
undercover Titusville officer suggested oral sex and $20 because he was
intimidated by the 'stocky black guy,' according to the statement. Allen, who is
white, also said that there 'was nothing but other black guys around in the
park' and that he thought he was about to be robbed. At the time, Allen was
unaware the other men also were undercover officers."

In his defense, just because he is asking for more money, doesn't mean it is all about the money. If he did get full custody, it would make sense that he would want more money.
Honestly though, Britney has long used to tabloids to fight her battles, that is what it sounds like it going on.
"That brings us to the paperwork Federline filed. Sources say there are
declarations from Kevin, both of his lawyers, Kevin's nanny and a nanny who
interviewed with Britney is October, 2006, before the couple separated. In the
papers, Federline's lawyer also included various magazine articles about
Britney. Legal experts say good luck getting that into evidence. Alli Sims,
Britney's cousin, was served over the weekend. Kevin's lawyer wants to take her
deposition. Now here's what's telling. Federline's lawyer also wants to take
Britney's depo, but a source connected with Alli says the deposition notice
Britney received is all financial -- in other words, the references are all
about money, not the kids."

"Mihdhar told his cousin that the attacks were to happen in May, but were

or early August, just like the warnings issued two weeks before the Cole bombing
and ten days before the eventual 9/11 attacks. During the midsummer alert, al
Qaeda members dispersed with their families, security was increased, and Bin

The country is at a deadlock on the Iraq war at this point. Those who support the war, have plenty of reasons to claim that things are going well. They have plenty of talking points that support the surge and the mission in Iraq. On the other hand those that are against the war, have plenty of their own talking points and data to suggest that things are not going well. The problem is that none of it is being looked at objectively. Both sides are clinging to their version of the truth, while discounting other versions.
I don't know what the truth on the ground in Iraq is. I trust that the generals do, and in September we will get a report.
"The surge they say is working – and American support is supposed to be on the
upswing …or so they say. O’Hanlon and Pollack are trotted out to make their faux
critical comments about the positive developments and we all look towards
September (or November?) when Gen Petraeus – who can’t even keep track of arms
shipments – will deliver his glowing analysis of the surge and why such success
means we must stay in Iraq for another 9-10 years. While the inherent dishonesty
of the O’Hanlon/Pollack “report” has been dissected by Glenn Greenwald and
others here and elsewhere – and congressional visitors have noted that success
does not look so successful when they can only move short distances around the
Baghdad region via helicopter (as Congresswoman Jan Scharkowsky reported on a
press briefing call this past Friday), we’re not supposed to notice."

While attacks from the left are to be expected as Rove gets ready to take his leave, he is also being attacked from the right. The left has hated Rove because of his support for the war, and his political style that has gotten him involved in a number of scandals in the administration. Those on the right are attacking Rove for not being conservative enough. They are blaming him for the parties drift away from the conservative principles that it was founded on.
"“Yes, Karl Rove was a political genius—he was, after all, the successful
architect of Bush’s election in 2000 and reelection in 2004. But as the
President’s chief policy advisor, Rove was the architect of George W. Bush’s
betrayal of the conservative cause.” — Richard Viguerie
“Rove will be remembered for his political skills, which helped Republicans
stage a resurgence in the early 2000s, only to lose a grip on Washington last
year. Rove always had his hand in everything, and if I fault him for one thing,
it’s straying from conservative principles.” — Robert Bluey"

Fred's Team On Rove: Enjoy The Retirement
Captain's Quarters: Fred's Team On Rove: Enjoy The Retirement
Regardless of the rumors that have started to spread that Rove was going to be joining the Thompson campaign, it appears he won't be. Statements from Thompson spokesperson indicate that there are no plans to bring Rove into the campaign. Rove himself has said in the past that he is pretty much a Bush person, indicating that he wouldn't back any other candidates. He has lots of time to write books, and do speaking appearances to make money.
Good luck with the rest of your life Karl.
"Asked about the prospect of a Rove-run campaign, former Rove spokesman and
current Thompson spokesman (ahem) Mark Corallo tells Radar, 'I really don't think Karl Rove is going to have anything to do with any campaign in 2008... I talked to him
today, and we shared some e-mails and I told him, 'Enjoy your time with your
family and take care of [your wife] Darby.''"

Crooks and Liars » Another Giuliani flip-flop:
Giuliani may be throwing gays under the bus as a means of advancing his campaign in what is a very conservative field, but it isn't going to work. Gays will rebel, and while you are thinking that gays don't vote republican, some do - in fact they have a group called the Log Cabin Republicans. On the other hand conservative Christians already have a number of choices in candidates who have been solidly against gay rights, from which to choose. When it comes down to voting, even if they see Giuliani as being against gay rights, they will see his position as being weak. Voters will choose someone with a strong stand on an issue versus a weak stand on an issue when two or more candidates have similar positions.
"Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to discard the moderate and
liberal positions of his past. The latest is civil unions for same-sex couples,
which the Republican presidential candidate has been backing away from in recent
months. A campaign aide told the Globe this weekend that Giuliani favors a much
more modest set of rights for gay partners than civil union laws in effect in
four states offer. […] “It’s really disappointing he’s stepped back from his
position on civil unions,” said Joe Tarver, spokesman for the Empire State Pride
Alliance, a group that advocates for gay rights in New York state that worked
with and against Giuliani on a number of issues during his eight years as mayor.
Calling the former mayor’s shifting stance “pretty un-Giuliani-like,” Tarver
said: “It’s quite obvious he’s playing to the people whose votes he needs to get
the Republican nomination.”"

Huckabee A Threat To Fred?
Captain's Quarters: Huckabee A Threat To Fred?
I don't think Fred is going to run for office, so Huckabee isn't a threat to him, and he might not be even if he does run. The person who he is the greatest threat to is Romney. What Romney has going for him right now is that he has a strong family, supports pro-life ideas and has a religious back ground. This is something that can't be said of any of the top tier candidates. If Huckabee becomes a top tier candidate he is going to take away votes from Romney. The majority of people in this country are evangelical Christians, like Huckabee and will vote for him over Romney. Huckabee has similar strengths as Romney in terms of family background and ideology. With the exception that his stand on abortion is stronger than Romney's, Huckabee has been painting Romney as weak on the issue.
"The Wall Street Journal takes a look at Mike Huckabee's surprisingly strong
performance in Iowa and wonders whether conservatives might take a second look
at the governor of Arkansas. Unlike Mitt Romney and Sam Brownback, Huckabee
didn't bring busloads of supporters to Ames, nor did he spend vast amounts of
money on the straw poll. Yet he managed to beat Brownback and steal Romney's
thunder on the basis of a live performace of 'Free Bird' and a large dose of
conservative stumping:"

The New Terrorists
Captain's Quarters: The New Terrorists
While I understand their concerns, and support their ideas, terror is terror. This is not something that should be condoned or accepted by the public. The FBI and other authorities should regard this form of terror with as much seriousness as it does Islamic terror. Threats of killing and killings are not the way that changes take place in a democracy. A democracy is based on the strength of ideas, if your ideas are strong, then you don't need terror.
"Molotov cocktails left on doorsteps. Bombs placed under cars at the homes of
targets. Death threats in public communiques. Are these new tactics for al-Qaeda
or Hezbollah? In fact, they're part of the new offensive by animal-rights
activists targeting the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, and only incompetence
has kept them from scoring their first kill "

Mitt says he 'misspoke' about his sons and military service - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth:
I honestly think it is too little too late, besides he may have misspoke but that wasn't the only time that he said that his sons were serving their country by campaigning with him. In answering a question of an audience member (unsure of location right now), about why his sons weren't in the service, he gave a similar answer.
"'I misspoke,'' the former Massachusetts governor said today on 'Fox News
Sunday.'' 'It's not service to the country, it's service for me, and there's
just no comparison there.'' ...Romney said today that he 'didn't mean in any way
to compare service in the country with my boys in any way. Service in this
country is an extraordinary sacrifice being made by individuals and their
families.''"

Italy: politician calls for ethnic cleansing of gays - AMERICAblog: A great nation deserves the truth:
From the little I understand about the government of the EU and its powers, this is a crime under their laws and they have the ability to punish this person. This is clearly not only hate speech, but an incitement to violence and genocide. Not only should he be out of office, he should be place in jail.
"'I will immediately give orders to my forces so that they can carry out
an ethnic cleansing of faggots,' Gentilini told the station in an interview.
'The faggots must go to other [places] where they are welcome. Here in Treviso
there is no chance for faggots or the like.'"

Ambassador Wilson On Rove’s Resignation Air America Radio:
Without Rove by his side is Bush headed for even more trouble, and if so will he be able to handle it. Rove has been one of Bush's strongest allies, and supporters, what does this mean for the future of his administration. In fact Rove was so powerful that many felt that he was the driving force behind a number of issues, and not the president himself. With Rove out of the White House, will he be forced to testify before congress? Will this mean less pressure on Bush or more?
"“Karl Rove's resignation signals the final chapter in the Bush
administration's betrayal of the identity of a covert CIA officer. When this
breach of national security occurred, the President promised the American people
that anybody in his administration responsible for the leak would be removed.
Rove, identified by the prosecutors as one of the leakers, not only was not
summarily dismissed, but has been allowed to leave on his own terms, to praise
from the President. This sordid tale of compromising national security to
cover-up and distract from the false rationale for the invasion of Iraq will
forever remain in history a black mark on the Bush presidency.”"
