ABC News: Cops Busted by Own Tapes:

ABC News: Cops Busted by Own Tapes:

"From shootouts caught by dashboard cameras to high-speed chases,
police confrontations caught on video are a huge spectator sport on the Web.
Originally, these videos were meant to help prosecute criminals, but now that
the public can view them with a single click, police are beginning to realize
that anyone can become judge and jury in just an instant — even the police
themselves."

While this might not be popular with some cops, I think that this is good for the public. One it gives them a window into the daily struggles that police officers face. It also gives them a way to see for themselves the actions that police are taking to protect them. Both actions that are heroic and actions that are far less so. While I understand that it means more stress for the officers, it even helps them in some cases. If a suspect claims to have been beaten in custody, but in on camera attacking on officer it helps to defeat the suspects claim.

Barnes & Noble Inc. has changed its mind about the new O.J. Simpson book.
After saying it would not stock copies of "If I Did It" in its stores,
citing lack of customer demand, the chain told The Associated Press on Thursday
that it would indeed carry the book.

Barnes & Noble changed its mind and chose the low road as opposed to to noble path. I know this is not the first book about a murder, it isn't even the first book about the OJ murder. However there is something that feels very wrong about this book.

Talking Points Memo What About Sen. David Vitter?:

"So how will Senate Republicans square their calls for Sen. Larry Craig's
resignation with their support for Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)? Let's put it this
way: Vitter did more than slide his foot under a bathroom stall. He has as much
as admitted to breaking the law by paying for prostitutes proffered by the D.C.
Madam. He left precious little ambiguity in his public statements, though he
didn't go quite as far as Craig's guilty plea."

I think Vitter needs to go now too. It is time to start cleaning house.

because there are parody sites…and some of them look like REAL websites of the
rich, famous and infamous. And some of them are so silly and laugh-out loud
outrageous, snarky and downright dumb that they seem like they MUST be the real

Someone is looking for a new job over this one I bet. It is basic journalism that you don't take one source and run with it, and you don't trust the internet. Besides Dolphin fighting rings?

Edwards Cuba Stumble Receives Meager Media Attention | NewsBusters.org

Edwards Cuba Stumble Receives Meager Media Attention NewsBusters.org:

"When an Iowa resident asked former senator John Edwards Thursday whether
the United States should follow the Cuban healthcare model, the 2004 vice
presidential contender deflected the question by saying he didn't know enough to
answer the question. 'I'm going to be honest with you - I don't know a lot about
Cuba's healthcare system,' Edwards, D-N.C., said at an event in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
'Is it a government-run system?'"

Sounds like an attempt to avoid the question at best. As a candidate and potential president, this is information that he should be aware of. This is after he had reportedly watch Michael Moore's movie "Sicko", which talks a little bit about Cuba.

It will never be enough, until we all come to the same crazy truther conclusions that these people came to immediately after the towers fell. These are people who feel like they have no control over their government, so they shun the government. They want to feel important, so they make up "truths" that they know and we don't to make themselves feel like they have power and knowledge that the rest of us are lacking.

Watching Those We Chose: Sen. Craig forced to resign from committee posts, calls for resignation grow louder:

"Republican leadership forced beleagured Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) to resign
from his committee and subcommittee posts today, and calls for his resignation
from the Senate grew louder within his own party. Sens. John McCain and Norm
Coleman and Rep. Peter Hoekstra all publicly called for Craig to step down."

This is the right thing to do. It sets the tone for the future discussion on the topic. It also sets the standard for what is the expected behavior in this situation. This isn't about morality, this is about the character of a person who would violate a relationship with his wife, engage in illegal behavior in a public restroom. I have strong doubts that a leader with a character like that is one that we should trust.

lgf: Japanese Internet Access: Really Really Fast:

"Broadband service here is eight to 30 times as fast as in the United
States — and considerably cheaper. Japan has the world’s fastest Internet

studies show. Accelerating broadband speed in this country — as well as in South
Korea and much of Europe — is pushing open doors to Internet innovation that are
likely to remain closed for years to come in much of the United States."

What I think we are seeing here is the results of how societies invest their capital. Europe and Japan have made vastly different choices in how they invest their capital than we have. It is no shock that the results that they have gotten are very different.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Video: Air Force set to deploy the Reaper:

"The Air Force next month will deploy a new generation of pilotless
airplane with the bombing power of an F-16 to help stop the stubborn Taliban
insurgency in Afghanistan. The Reaper is an upgraded version of the Predator,
which has become one of the military’s most sought-after planes since it first
appeared in Afghanistan in 2001. The Reaper can fly three times as fast as a
Predator and carry eight times more weaponry, such as Hellfire missiles, the Air
Force said."

I think Obama had a point, though he could have communicated it better. The bombing of targets from 10,000 feet means that we are killing innocent people. I am not suggesting that we are targeting them, but that they result from being too close to the targets, or being confused with the targets. More importantly though, it gives the image of a lack of concern for civilian lives. That one thing could defeat us faster than any weapons. The solution is tricky, and I don't know what it is, because troops on the ground present problems of a different nature. I doubt more fire power in the skies is going to calm the fighting though.

The fact that it is pilotless, and that it is a person hundreds or thousands of miles away from the action, targeting militants and killing civilians is not a good image.

The Truth About Iraq

Townhall.com::Blog The Truth About Iraq

HH: Now General, when I was looking over your bio to prepare for this, you’ve
served a whole bunch of places in the world, Germany, Korea, Kuwait, of course
now in Iraq, so you’ve seen a lot of different foreign armies operating. Is the
quality of the Iraqi officer corps of the sort that can preserve a military
supporting a civilian government over the long haul? Or as we’ve seen before, a
lot of Arab governments have fallen to a lot of army officers with guns drawn in
coups. What’s that situation like?
JS: That, you know, Hugh, that’s a real good question. I have not personally observed political motivation from the senior leadership in the Iraqi Army. And what I see is some dedicated professionals who are seriously interested in the welfare of Iraq as a nation,
and they are concerned about getting the insurgency under control, and making
sure that they have an army that’s capable of defending Iraq against her
traditional enemies here in the Middle East. Of course, there is a history in
Iraq of the army selecting the leadership of the government. I mean, that has
certainly happened here in Iraq during its relatively short history as a modern
nation. But I have not seen that in dealing with the majority of the senior
folks that I deal with. Now what I would tell you is that when you get further
down the system, and you get down to the captains and the majors, they are very,
very strongly influenced by our young leaders that are out there on the
battlefield with them every day. And they are embracing the idea of the American
armed forces about selfless service and dedication to the nation, and I see that
as those more junior officers continue to develop and grow into leadership
positions, that the Iraqi Armed Forces has a potential to have a very capable
and professional armed forces that is loyal to the elected government.

If this report from Gen. James E. Simmons is accurate, then Iraq has a strong potential to survive as a country. This will be attacked by people on the right as propaganda because it doesn't fit the picture that they have of Iraq. They will claim that it is a whitewash, I think that even if half of what he is saying is true, then the country has a stronger future than many might believe right now.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Huckabee unloads on Fred: The would-be emperor has no clothes:

"In an interview I conducted this week in Iowa with presidential candidate
Mike Huckabee, I asked him to explain why Fred Thompson was getting so much
attention before he even enters the presidential race.He said, “I frankly don’t
get it. I mean I’m not being unkind I just don’t understand it because there’s
not a substantial record in the Senate in him having authored the landmark
signature bill that changed America. There’s not been in essence the kind of
thing that says boy I remember when he did and then you fill in the blank. I
think a lot of it is that people aren’t sure whether they’re electing a former
senator or Arthur Branch. Anytime a person is on television a lot and a
celebrity there’s a sense in which people are given a unique pedestal on which
to stand and it’s the celebrity more than it is anything, the attention that
comes from that and the sort of gee whiz factor and I’ve seen him on TV.”"

He makes a couple solid points here. We really know very little about his stand on the issues and what kind of president he would be. Also there is the question of if people are voting for Fred Thompson the actor/lobbyist or are the voting for his character DA Branch. It is my opinion, if and when he joins the race he will sink in the polls quickly. I wonder if he is delaying an entrance in the race, hoping that people will connect more with his DA character than they do with him.

"In response to the $2.7 billion cuts to Medicare that were passed by the U.S.
House of Representatives in the Children’s Health and Medicare Protection Act

TV and print campaign in Congressional districts across the country. The
campaign warns that proposed cuts will jeopardize ongoing quality improvements
in America’s nursing homes, threaten thousands of local health care jobs, and
irrationally return Medicare funding levels to those seen almost a decade ago."

I first want to say that I think this was one of the under reported weaknesses in the bill. Secondly, a step like supporting the bill is dangerous for politicians, because seniors vote, kids don't vote. Parents vote sometimes, when they have the time between everything else in their lives.

It will take the next six months to reorganize itself, and in the meantime will
conduct no offensive operations in Iraq, including actions against American

This sounds like a positive step for Iraq, and the American mission there. Hopefully Sadr's group will reform as more of a political movement and less of a militant movement. The less armed factions and more political ones in Iraq, the better.

Captain's Quarters

Captain's Quarters: Poverty Rates Drop In US

"The nation’s poverty rate fell in 2006 for the first time this decade, the
Census Bureau reported today, even as the percentage of Americans without health
insurance coverage hit a record high. The results were not consistent across
racial or age groups. For Hispanics, the poverty rate fell by 1.2 percentage
points to 20.6 percent, while for whites, blacks and Asians, it remained
statistically unchanged."

This is what you would expect to see as the Hispanic immigrants become part of the culture and gain more of a stake in the economy. Every group comes into the country at the bottom of the social-economic pile and have to struggle their way to the top. This also points to doubts about the effects of immigration driving down wages, the Hispanic wages wouldn't have risen at all if this is the case.

No wonder they live in a dump, they are giving all their money to Hilary. The best thing for Hilary to do, is to get in front of this. She should claim that she and her campaign had no knowledge of a scam, and publicly return the money. It wouldn't change some peoples view of the situation, but it would address some peoples concerns.
