Why Obama liked the Birther movement

This is by far the most clear, and best point, I have read regarding the whole Birther scandal. Truth is he could have done this four years ago, and he didn't. He may have had a good reason, but I don't see what it could have been. Also I doubt he does anything for less than political reasons.

What is clear from recent White House statements is that Mr. Obama and his advisers felt that the "birthers" were a right-wing fringe, that could be used to drive a wedge between Republicans and independent voters.  What better reason to keep the issue cloudy?
