California tops list of most endangered rivers

I am not surprised that the Sacramento/San Joaquin river system, which is much more than a river system for the state, would top this list. It is probably one of the most abused and used watersheds in the country.

Report lists America's 10 most endangered rivers

1) Sacramento-San Joaquin River System

Outdated water and flood management puts California's largest watershed at the top of America's most endangered rivers list for 2009. A recent breach in the delta's 1,100-mile levee system could have dire effects on surrounding ecosystems, farming and agriculture, commercial fishing and California's civil infrastructure. State and federal authorities are looking at alternative water-management strategies for the river system, which serves 25 million Californians and more than 5 million acres of farmland.

Fire or Books

I hate to put it in these terms, but the truth is that the state is looking at a choice of spending money on saving mansions or funding education. It is my opinion they are putting too much money into saving replaceable houses, at the cost of an irreplaceable education.

California Town sinks in Debt

I'm not surprised it is a valley town.
clipped from www.nytimes.com
Because of plunging home values, almost 90 percent of homeowners here owe more
on their mortgages than their houses are worth, according to figures released
Monday. That is the highest percentage in the country. The average homeowner in
Mountain House is “underwater,” as it is known, by $122,000.

MotherJones Blog: Now on the San Francisco Ballot: The George W. Bush Sewage Plant

MotherJones Blog: Now on the San Francisco Ballot: The George W. Bush Sewage Plant:

"It's the mother lode of all potty jokes: In November, San Francisco
voters will decide whether to rechristen the city's Oceanside Water Pollution
Control Plant as the George. W Bush Sewage Plant."

This is just childish.

Michelle Malkin » San Fran mayor Gavin Newsom for governor?

Michelle Malkin » San Fran mayor Gavin Newsom for governor?:

"While the Chronicle’s been covering San Francisco’s Honduran crack dealer
municipal shuttle service, they’ve also spared some space to write about the
gubernatorial ambitions of San Fran’s mayor. Gavin Newsom thinks he’s got what
it takes to succeed the Governator."

He will be running against Jerry Brown, which will make it an interesting race.

Entire town of Big Sur, Calif., evacuated for fire - Yahoo! News

Entire town of Big Sur, Calif., evacuated for fire - Yahoo! News:

"BIG SUR, Calif. - Authorities ordered the remaining residents of this scenic
coastal community to leave Wednesday because an out-of-control wildfire, one of
hundreds in California, had jumped a fire line and was threatening more homes."

It is such a beautiful area, this is sad news. On the other hand fires are a part of life for a forest. I think the proper response for fires in the forest is to let them burn. If there are houses in danger, ask the people to leave and if the house burns it burns. Fire is a part of a healthy forest, and to prevent fires only makes them more deadlier for the forest and for humyns when they happen.

The forests will live through the fire, they have for thousands of years.

Rudy Giuliani Tries To Goose The Election In California - Oliver Willis

Rudy Giuliani Tries To Goose The Election In California - Oliver Willis:

"A close friend and major fundraiser of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has
identified himself as the mystery financer of the proposed California initiative
to apportion the state's 55 electoral votes by congressional district instead of
winner-take-all. "

Now we know who was behind that little trick.

The BRAD BLOG : California Secretary of State: Voting Machine 'Sleepovers' Violate State Law

The BRAD BLOG : California Secretary of State: Voting Machine 'Sleepovers' Violate State Law:

"The matter of voting machine 'sleepovers' --- the practice of sending
pre-programmed, election-ready voting systems home with pollworkers, often days
and weeks prior to elections, for deliver to polls on Election Day --- first
became a controversy last year after The BRAD BLOG exposed the issue as it
occurred during San Diego's special election to replace disgraced Republican
U.S. House Rep. Randy 'Duke' Cunningham. "

Why isn't this one of those ideas that we should just understand is wrong. Even if the person who is watching the machine is honest, his life is in danger if someone wants to either force him to tamper with it, or break into the house to tamper with it themselves. Just a bad idea.

MotherJones.com | MoJoBlog - Social Issues and Political Commentary: GOP-Supported California Ballot Measure is Unconstitutional

MotherJones.com MoJoBlog - Social Issues and Political Commentary: GOP-Supported California Ballot Measure is Unconstitutional:

"The U.S. Constitution prohibits a ballot measure that would trump a state
legislature's chosen method of appointing electors. In Article II, Section 1,
the Constitution declares that electors shall be appointed by states 'in such
manner as the Legislature thereof may direct.' That's legislature."

This is good news for Democrats not only in the golden state, but across the country. California is after all the work horse of electoral votes for Democrats. The legislature is now in the hands of the Democrats, and under the current political environment that doesn't seem likely to change. If it does though, this could come back, since the legislature would be able to make this change.

Lodi jihadist sentenced to 24 years

Lodi jihadist sentenced to 24 years

A California man convicted of attending an al-Qaida camp in Pakistan was
sentenced to 24 years in federal prison Monday for supporting terrorists,
concluding a case that divided a Central Valley farming community.
U.S.
District Court Judge Garland Burrell Jr. imposed the sentence against Hamid
Hayat on his 25th birthday, saying he had “attended a terrorist training camp,
returned to the United States ready and willing to wage violent jihad when
directed to do so.”

Thanks to this case I don't know how much I can trust ice cream men anymore. One of the operatives caught in the investigation drove an ice cream truck.

PoliPundit.com » “San Francisco hopes to reverse black flight”

PoliPundit.com » “San Francisco hopes to reverse black flight”:

"Wayne Cooksey joined the flight of African-Americans from this city last year
to escape soaring rents and buy a home. Michael Higgenbotham left six years ago
for a safer neighborhood and better schools for his three children. Adell Adams
retired and wanted to downsize but knew her home’s equity wouldn’t go far in a
market where decent condos start at $500,000. Aubrey Lewis was among the first
to go, to nearby Oakland in 1977. “We left because of the housing situation,”
says Lewis, 77. “And that was early. It hasn’t gotten much better.”"

Unless there are measures that are being taken to drive African-Americans from the cities, why should anyone be concerned. At the end of the second world war, a lot of men came back from the war, had some money earned, some went to school, and a lot of those families moved to the suburbs for a better life. This might just be a sign that families in the black community are also developing more income and the ability to move to the suburbs to have a better life. No matter what race you are, having a family in the city is not practical. No one dreams of having a two bedroom apartment for their kids to run around in. This sounds like much a do about nothing.
