"But in Safstrom's view, the American presence is futile. 'If we stayed
here for 5, even 10 more years, the day we leave here these guys will go crazy,'
he said. 'It would go straight into a civil war. That's how it feels, like we're
putting a Band-Aid on this country until we leave here.'"
While I do believe that the troops have a right to a voice, I don't like the way that groups are using their statements. The troops in Iraq are Americans, and like all Americans they have a wide range of thoughts about the war, and if it is right to be there or not. There are troops out there that think the war is wrong and there are ones out there that think the war is right. What happens is that groups will seek out the troops that say the things that they want to hear, then they will promote that message. Sometimes it will be implied and others it will be stated, by the logic is that if a soldier is saying it, it must be true. The soldiers on the ground do see the war in ways that we will never know sitting in our homes, but they also miss things that the politicians see.
This does not respect the soldiers and their opinions, it abuses them and disrespects the opinions of those that hold views that are not favorable to the groups putting out the messages.
