This nature of language makes me sad, but the truth is that this is not a problem only of how the right talks about the left or the left talks about the right. The problem cuts across party lines, and it isn't even a matter of language, language only reveals what is the deeper problem. The deeper problem is that we are losing the ability to disagree with someone and still respect them. This is bad news for the conversation of America, and it is bad news for our democracy which depends on that conversation.
