Critics on the right of the stories that have been published in The New Republic, point to this as a potential for where the story of soldiers playing with skulls came from. It could be that this is the case, and that the author of the columns in The New Republic just adapted the tale to fit his unit. I think that there is a small window after an event, where the truth will come out and it will be believed. After the window has closed, the lies and the doubt gets so thick in the air it is almost impossible to see fact from fiction.
