"Transport Workers Union threw in their support for Democratic presidential
hopeful John Edwards yesterday. Union president James C. Little said of their
support for Edwards: “Some candidates seem to be figuring out how to best
triangulate on campaign issues. John Edwards takes on subjects such as job
security, health care, retirement and the growing gap in wealth between the rich
and the middle class in a straight forward way that the country and working
families desperately need.'"
For better or worse the power of the unions in this country is no where near as strong as it once was. Supporting a candidate doesn't do so much in terms of delivering the votes of the union members as it does in creating an image for the candidate. That image is that the candidate supports workers, so they support him. It is questionable to me how much influence they have even in this regard.
