According to the LA Times “The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is expected
to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost
half, potentially creating a rift with top White House officials and other
military commanders over the course of the war.
If the general says that the troops should stay longer, than I think that the troops should be kept longer. If the general says that the troops should be taken out, then that is what should happen. It can't be both ways, where you praise the general when he agrees with you, and not when he doesn't.
UPDATE: I was thinking of Gen. Petraeus when I wrote this post. As far as a stand between Pace and Petraeus, I don't know.
