ABC News: Ex-Astronaut May Use Insanity Defense:

"Defense attorney Donald Lykkebak said in the filing that Nowak suffered from
major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, insomnia and 'brief psychotic
disorder with marked stressors.'"

Sorry I don't buy it, and I don't think that this defense should stick. In order to have an insanity defense you need to be able to show that there was no planning. This attack was planned in detail, far in advance, this is not the product of an irrational mind, rather it is the product of a planning rational mind.
