Obama was the featured speaker at Iowa Senator Tom Harkin's annual steak fry, a political event favored by presidential hopefuls in the lead-up to the Iowa caucus. He was endorsed by talk show host Oprah Winfrey in 2006. Various recent opinion polls have seen Obama trailing only Hillary Clinton in several polls. If elected, he would become the first part African-American President of the United States. Obama announced on February 10, 2007, that he will run in 2008. He has filed the official paperwork."

Danger Room - Wired Blogs

Danger Room - Wired Blogs:

"For years, members of the military brass have been warning that soldiers'
blogs could pose a security threat by leaking sensitive wartime information. But
a series of online audits, conducted by the Army, suggests that official Defense
Department websites post far more potentially-harmful than blogs do. The audits,
performed by the Army Web Risk Assessment Cell between January 2006 and January
2007, found at least 1,813 violations of operational security policy on 878
official military websites. In contrast, the 10-man, Manassas, Virginia, unit
discovered 28 breaches, at most, on 594 individual blogs during the same
period."

Sounds like the troops are better at protecting their own security while blogging than Defense Department officials running websites for the government.

White House to Offer Iraq Plan of Gradual Cuts - New York Times

White House to Offer Iraq Plan of Gradual Cuts - New York Times:

"WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 — The White House plans to use a report next month
assessing progress in Iraq to outline a plan for gradual troop reductions
beginning next year that would fall far short of the drawdown demanded by
Congressional opponents of the war, according to administration and military
officials. One administration official made it clear that the goal of the
planned announcement was to counter public pressure for a more rapid reduction
and to try to win support for a plan that could keep American involvement in
Iraq on “a sustainable footing” at least through the end of the Bush presidency. "

This sounds like a sound plan, though some democrats are fond of saying that we just marched in there, we can just march out - it really isn't that simple. While I don't know if it is true that we will have to deal with attacks at home if we withdrawal, a poorly planed exit does nothing but destroy the work that has been accomplished, make even bigger targets of our troops and ushers in a reign of chaos that could damage the whole region.

ABC News: Giuliani-McCain: That's the Ticket?

ABC News: Giuliani-McCain: That's the Ticket?:

"At a campaign event Aug. 8, 2007, Giuliani told a crowd in Iowa, 'I happen
to be a very big admirer of Sen. McCain and I can tell you quite honestly that
if I weren't running for president I would be here supporting him. If for some
reason I made a decision not to run he'd be my candidate.' It was the second
time this summer Giuliani voiced support for McCain without much prompting. 'I'm
flattered by that,' McCain told ABC News Radio. 'That's a very nice thing for
him to say. I have great respect for him and we are very friendly.' "

Is this the prelude to an offer of joining on the ticket together. Does a Giuliani-McCain ticket have what it takes to beat the democratic nominee. What does each bring to the table that makes the union stronger. One theory is based on geography, and I think that one could be important in this race. If Hilary and Rudy get the nominations for their parties - they are both based in New York. The tickets will be searching for vice presidents that could balance that. For Rudy that makes McCain, from the western state of Arizona a good choice, maybe Hilary could go with Richardson from New Mexico.

Ideologically McCain and Giuliani are not that far apart, they both have a weak history on the immigration issue, they both support the current course in Iraq and they both have a rocky relationship with the religious base of the party. Ideologically speaking Giuliani might be better paired with someone like Huckabee that can bring in the religious voters. As the governor of Arkansas he has the potential to bring geographic balance to the ticket as well.

Was John McCain ever against the war like he claims. I personally don't care if he was or was not for the war all along, reasonable people can disagree. What does concern me is if he is telling us the truth about where he stood on the issue.

Talking Points Memo | Giuliani endorses Bush’s Social Security plan

Talking Points Memo Giuliani endorses Bush’s Social Security plan:

"Giuliani stressed his desire to have private forces shape the country's economy
in education as well as in health care and Social Security. He said he supported
President Bush's unsuccessful proposal to allow people to invest some of their
Social Security taxes in private accounts. 'I would have preferred, over my
lifetime, if I could have invested some of that Social Security money myself,'
said Giuliani, 63. 'I think I would have done much better than the government
did. I believe young people today, a lot of them feel that way. I think people
who want a private option should be entitled to have it.'"

Social security is a safety net for older people. It is meant to be there to take care of those who get to old to work. It is a system that I think I am not alone in feeling should be protected, I also think I am not alone in feeling mistrustful of attempts to change that system. Bush could not get this through, and I think that this is a failing stand for Giuliani as well. It should be noted that the majority of elderly people are conservative, and live off social security. When you talk about changing the system - you are talking about their pay checks and it doesn't make them happy.

Daily Kos: The difference between us and them

Daily Kos: The difference between us and them:

"Every now and then, it is worth noting that substantial portions of the
right-wing political movement in the United States -- the Pajamas
Media/right-wing-blogosphere/Fox News/Michelle Malkin/Rush-Limbaugh-listener
strain -- actually believe that Islamists are going to take over the U.S. and
impose sharia law on all of us. And then we will have to be Muslims and 'our
women' will be forced into burkas and there will be no more music or gay bars or
churches or blogs. This is an actual fear that they have -- not a theoretical
fear but one that is pressing, urgent, at the forefront of their
worldview."

I agree with the larger point in this essay, it goes on to talk about how America is stronger than the forces of Islam that would take us over. The freedoms that we have, and the ability to use those freedoms is what makes America strong. There are forces that would use those freedoms to their advantage, attempting to defeat America - but I don't think that it will work.

On the other hand, when the essay claims that those who have these fears believe that we will lose the battle. Their point isn't that America is weak, and it cannot win in a fight, they believe America is strong. What their concern appears to be, is that there is a threat that they don't think America is facing and dealing with. Some of these threats I think are silly, like the placing of foot baths in bathrooms of universities. Others should be taken more seriously.

Everyone knows that America can win the fight, the question is who is the enemy and how should be counter their attacks?

MotherJones.com MoJoBlog - Social Issues and Political Commentary: New Lawsuit: Michael Vick is Going to Need a Bigger Contract:

"An offbeat South Carolina prison inmate has filed a handwritten lawsuit seeking
$63 quintillion from Michael Vick. That's $63,000,000,000,000,000,000. Or as
Jonathan Lee Riches put it in his handwritten lawsuit, '$63,000,000,000
billion.' The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Richmond on July 23.
Riches -- who has developed an Internet cult following for his propensity to
file strange lawsuits naming multiple diverse defendants -- claims that Vick
stole his pit bulls and sold them on eBay to 'use the proceeds to purchase
missiles from the Iran government.' In the complaint, Riches scrawls that
'Michael Vick has to stop physically hurting my feelings and dashing my hopes.'
If he wins the lawsuit, Riches says he wants the $63 quintillion delivered in
gold and silver to the front gate of the Williamsburg Federal Correctional
Facility in South Carolina, where he is housed as he serves a conviction for
wire fraud."

This is too funny, I bet that Vick is shaking in his boots. What is this guy going to do with all this silver and gold in jail anyways?

MotherJones.com MoJoBlog - Social Issues and Political Commentary: Court Denies FTC Injunction Against Whole Foods Merger:

"The proposed merger between Whole Foods and Wild Oats is back on the

Let it go through, the health food market isn't as isolated as it used to be. Now Safeway, and even Wal-Mart are moving into the market with their own products and stocking organic/health food on its shelves. Whole Foods isn't competing just against Wild Oats, but in the larger grocery market which has lots of competition.

Michelle Malkin » Hillary’s socialist housing bailout plan

Michelle Malkin » Hillary’s socialist housing bailout plan:

"In her address to about 250 people in a Derry elementary school gymnasium,
Clinton criticized unscrupulous mortgage brokers who push customers into
borrowing more to pad their commission or are dishonest about the true cost of
the loan. To help curb the number of foreclosures, Clinton proposed setting up a
$1 billion fund to assist homeowners in making arrangements with lending
companies to stay in their home. She also discussed the lack of affordable
housing, an issue that is particularly a problem in New England. To promote more
affordable housing construction, Clinton proposed another $1 billion fund which
would be distributed to state, county and local affordable housing
programs."

I have two issues with this. One is that the only way her bail out program can work in my opinion is if it doesn't forgive the loans, but restructures them. An example might be how some student loans are handled. I had a number of student loans that went into default, but the government was able to help me through a program called the William D Ford foundation. It didn't erase those debts, but it made them more manageable and got me a slightly better interest rate. A similar program could work for home owners, they would still have to pay off the loan, but plans could be set up to make that easier. An additional condition would be that when and if the house were sold - all proceeds of the home must first go to paying down the loan before the owners could take any of the money from the sale. That would mean that some people would receive no money for selling their house and still owe money. That is harsh, but truth be told, they took the risk of buying a house, and I think that they should face the consequences of that gamble.

Second is that if she wants housing to be more affordable, the easiest and best way for that to happen is to allow these bad debts to collapse. As they do, the houses that were purchased with those bad debts will go back on the market. With the increase in supply the prize will go down.

lgf: Drunken Anti-Israel Climate Change Hooligans Who Love Hamas

lgf: Drunken Anti-Israel Climate Change Hooligans Who Love Hamas:

"Police were confident of being able to contain the expected climax of the
climate camp at Heathrow Airport. Protesters, buoyed by an influx of new
arrivals, promised 24 hours of direct action, starting from midday on Sunday.
The move came after 20 anarchists from the camp broke into a warehouse in Hayes,
owned by Carmel Agrexco, an Israeli fruit and vegetable importer. Up to six were
arrested on suspicion of burglary, police said."

Political crimes are one thing, and teenage hooliganism is another. The worst of all cases is when they are mixed, and you can't tell one from the other. Do you think that for one moment this was about anything more than the vandalistic act of attacking the warehouse, and looting it. I doubt for one moment that these people would honestly support Hamas, if they knew what it stood for. For me this act falls into an act of vandalism and hooliganism, because I don't believe it was as politically motivated as the protesters would have us believe. Many of the left, have developed the disease of Compulsive Israel Hatred, and it spreads with such a veracity, that others get it and don't really understand why they are supposed to be hating Israel. They become unthinking drones attacking Israel and rooting for its enemies.

Daily Kos: Obama's had enough

Daily Kos: Obama's had enough:

debates, Sen. Barack Obama's campaign manager has put his foot down: Obama won't
attend any more debates that aren't sanctioned by the Democratic National
Committee, and he won't accept any more invitations to speak at candidate
forums. "

Much of the debates are the same questions that are asked, over and over again. There are some that clearly have a more pressing agenda than others. The LOGO debate or the labor debate are both examples of debates that were clearly held to answer questions that matter to those groups but might not be asked in the other debates. I think that Obama is making the right move here.

Daily Kos: The President's Radio Address

Daily Kos: The President's Radio Address:

"Unfortunately, political progress at the national level has not matched the
pace of progress at the local level. The Iraqi government in Baghdad has many
important measures left to address, such as reforming the de-Baathification
laws, organizing provincial elections, and passing a law to formalize the
sharing of oil revenues. America will continue to urge Iraq's leaders to meet
the benchmarks they have set. Yet Americans can be encouraged by the progress
and reconciliation that are taking place at the local level. An American
politician once observed that 'all politics is local.' In a democracy, over time
national politics reflects local realities. And as reconciliation occurs in
local communities across Iraq, it will help create the conditions for
reconciliation in Baghdad as well. "

On July 4th, 1776 a great nation declared that it was independent from foreign rule.
On September 17, 1787 that same nation signed a constitution.

It took America, a country of similar religious and ethic background, with little history of violence between various parties 11 years to sign a constitution. Is it fair to expect that Iraq will solve all of its political problems, and form a government in one year?

Crooks and Liars » Plumbing Contractor Bills Pentagon $1 Million Dollars For Two Washers Worth 38 Cents

Crooks and Liars » Plumbing Contractor Bills Pentagon $1 Million Dollars For Two Washers Worth 38 Cents:

"Plumbers are notorious for excessive bills. But none has come even remotely
close to matching an extravagant claim by a South Carolina firm: almost $1m
(£500,000) for two metal washers worth 19c each. Charlene Corley, 47, co-owner
of the plumbing and electrical firm C&D Distributors, who supplied parts to
the military, is awaiting sentence after pleading guilty yesterday to defrauding
the Pentagon. She faces 20 years in jail. The most expensive washers in history
were part of $20.5m the company stole from the Pentagon over the last 10 years.
The company shipped plumbing and electrical parts to US bases round the world,

This should be a crime of Treason... That money is money that could have and should have been spent supporting our troops in Iraq.

Talk To Action | Reclaiming Citizenship, History, and Faith

Talk To Action Reclaiming Citizenship, History, and Faith:

"Plans by a Christian group to send an evangelical video game to U.S.
troops in Iraq were abruptly halted yesterday by the Department of Defense after
ABC News inquired about the program. Operation Start Up (OSU) Tour, an
evangelical entertainment troupe that actively proselytizes among soldiers, will
not be sending the 'apocryphal' video game in care packages as planned,
according to the department. 'Left Behind: Eternal Forces' was inspired by about
the battle of Armageddon, in which believers of Jesus Christ fight the
Antichrist."

This is wrong on so many levels. I am not going to suggest that our troops are so poorly trained, or not smart enough to understand the difference between a game and reality - there are other problems

The first problem I see with this, is the event of not if, but when it would leak to the Iraqis. Nothing would harm us on a publicity level more than a video game that shows a religious war of Christians against unbelievers. The Arab street would be outraged, and I would agree that they would have reason. The American image abroad, in Iraq and other parts of the Arab world, is not that strong right now. There are a number of people who want to make this into a battle of the West versus Islam, this would give them more ammo to do that.

Besides, sending a video game about war to troops in a war zone, does that make any sense to you. I would think that they would want sports video games - something to get their minds off the war.

Talk To Action | Reclaiming Citizenship, History, and Faith

Talk To Action Reclaiming Citizenship, History, and Faith:

"In light of the recent attack from the enemies of God I ask the children of God

Learing. They are those who lead the attack. (You can see their press release

I spend a fair amount of time on this site pointing out the violence that exists in Islam. Personally I am not much of a religious person, so I don't have a horse in this race. The fact that I think Christianity has evolved past the violence in its past, and that I believe Islam will too, is something that I have expressed a number of times. In all fairness I want to point out that there is still violence in the Christian church. Like this pastor who calls down the wrath of god to smite his foes. What did he foes do, they suggested his use of church letterhead for a campaign letter was inappropriate.

Where ever you stand on the war in Iraq, you should think about supporting the troops with a letter. If you support the war, then tell them that. If you can't write expressing political support - write about the weather, or just send a poem. This isn't about supporting Bush or his policies, it is about letting the soldiers who are serving their country know they are not alone. I posted this before, but I wanted to post it again.

Edwards Jumps The Shark

Captain's Quarters: Edwards Jumps The Shark

"Former Sen. John Edwards on Friday fired the latest round in his ongoing
verbal feud with Ann Coulter, calling her a 'she-devil' at a public event before
quickly adding that he shouldn't engage in name-calling. Edwards, D-N.C., was
railing against the right-wing media -- including Fox News and Rush Limbaugh --
when he reminded a crowd in Burlington, Iowa, that his wife stood up to Coulter
in a public spat earlier this summer. 'We know these people. We know their game
plan. They're going to attack us personally,' Edwards said. 'They attacked
Elizabeth personally, because she stood up to that she-devil Ann Coulter. … I
should not have name-called. But the truth is -- forget the names -- people like
Ann Coulter, they engage in hateful language.'"

I think this is a losing strategy for Edwards, for a number of reasons. The first one to come to mind is that he has everything to lose, and Ann Coulter and Fox News have everything to gain. How many people who are going to be listening to an Edwards speech are going to stop watching Fox just because he said so. Most of them probably don't watch it anyways - otherwise they wouldn't buy the attack. The same thing with Ann Coulter, how many people in his audience purchase her books or go to events where she is a paid speaker - my guess is none. He is preaching to the choir. However, his attacks give both Ann Coulter and fox News reason to cheer. Ann courts a clearly conservative audience, and when someone liberal like Edwards is attacking her, it becomes a selling point for herself and her ideas. Fox News can bring out the same game, what is he afraid of, why is he attacking us, is it because he is afriad of the truth?

Further it does nothing to tell America how he is different from his other democratic candidates. IT does not promote his ideas, and explain the kind of leader he is going to be. Unless the kind of leader he is going to be is one that attacks those who disagree with him. I think Edwards needs to stick to that issues, he has a solid base to work from when talking about poverty - focus on that. Fox News and Ann Coulter have and will be engaged in their own politics of attack. Ignore them, it will make them look silly, like they are talking to themselves.

day he showed up on the set and was turned away with a “Sorry, you’re not in
this movie.” It looks like Kevin Federline isn’t ready for his closeup after
all. Britney Spears’ baby-daddy was to have appeared, briefly, in Keanu Reeves’
new film, “The Night Watchman.”"

While things are looking good for him in his legal battles with his ex, things don't appear to be moving along with his career. He had a small part in the movie, such a small part that no one thought to tell him when it was cut. Its ok, he doesn't need to work, he has Britney's money.

» Lindsay Lohan’s Father Will Never Shut Up - Mocksie.com:

"Papa Lohan played a tape to Extra, which he claimed was from a phone
conversation he had with Lindsay. The alleged voice of Lindsay said, “I called
mom earlier and asked her how to get through to you … She wouldn’t tell me. … To
be honest, I sat in a room with Cody (brother) and he wants to see you but he is
so afraid of what mom tells him … I know that mom still loves you. Dad, I’m the
same person as you. I’m the same as you. … Why are you becoming a minister? Dad,
that’s retarded. Are you becoming a minister to prove yourself? You don’t have
to be a minister to stay sober … I know that mom’s drinking did not keep you
sober. Mom, shouldn’t drink, I know.”"

This man is becoming more of a media pimp than Joe Simpson, at least he never played recorded private conversations for the media. What a whore, I hope that since this trial is over, that this is the last we are going to hear of him. I wouldn't mind not hearing from Dina again either to he honest and fair.

Gabby Babble: Oprah Paid A Staff Member a $65K Overtime Bonus

Gabby Babble: Oprah Paid A Staff Member a $65K Overtime Bonus:

"Oprah Winfrey shocked her staff by paying on hard-working staff member a $65K
bonus for overtime. Carla Bird had reportedly worked 800 hours of overtime from
January to April 2007 according to the NYP Page Six."

That sounds fair, my rough math shows that is about 7 hours of over time a day. I am working in the wrong job. I worked over time all the time in my last job, and all I got for it was a thank you.
