Marginal Revolution: Harry Potter must die

Marginal Revolution: Harry Potter must die:

"Bookies are certain Harry's a goner. William Hill Plc, a London-based
bookmaker, is so sure of Harry's demise that it stopped accepting wagers and
shifted betting to the possible killers. Lord Voldemort, who murdered Potter's
parents, is the most likely villain, at 2-1 odds, followed by Professor Snape,
one of his teachers, at 5-2. 'Every penny was on Harry dying, and it became
untenable,'' said Rupert Adams, a William Hill spokesman. 'People are obsessed
about this book.'' "

Is Harry doomed to die, seems that a lot of people are willing to make a sure bet of it.

Firedoglake - Firedoglake weblog » Be Careful Where You Aim That Mud, Hillary:

"Then, Eness-Potter got a glimpse of what may become the positive side of
Clinton’s message: “During Bill Clinton’s administration, the Clintons helped to
create 100,000 jobs in Iowa. After hearing this, is your opinion of Sen. Clinton
higher or lower?” The caller went on to ask a few questions about Clinton’s
campaign platform, asking whether specific campaign promises, as worded by the
campaign’s pollster, make Jason more or less likely to support her.
But the
survey didn’t end there. As Eness-Potter’s patience continued to wane, the
caller started into the negative questions about Clinton’s opponents. Although
he cut the caller off fairly quickly after he saw where the caller was headed,
he recalled two questions — one about Sen. Barack Obama and the other about
former Sen. John Edwards — that were particularly memorable."

This is dirty.

Battle over ‘vulture funds’ Greg Palast

Battle over ‘vulture funds’ Greg Palast:

"We’re not talking about the feathered birds of prey, but predators with allies
in the White House and Swiss bank vaults full of untraceable currency. These
speculators buy up the debt of the poorest nations on the planet for pennies on
the dollar — then use legal extortion or less-than-legal bribery to extract
payments from these nations - payments equal to five, ten or twenty times what
the vultures “invested.”"

I don't understand this issue very well but I think that it should be shared. From what I understand the debt comes from some of the poorest countries, the debt is sold to what amounts to a large collection agency for pennies on the dollar. They take that and go to court against the country in England, forcing the country to pay back to total debt that is owed. With a ruling in their favor in England they cross they pond to New York. The debt relief movements are setting aside money to help countries to get out from under this debt. The companies go and take that money which should be used to help the people of the countries targeted, to pay off the debts pennies for.

Daily Kos: Immigration Bill Dead, for Now

Daily Kos: Immigration Bill Dead, for Now:

"WASHINGTON- A broad immigration bill to legalize millions of people in the U.S.
unlawfully failed a crucial test vote in the Senate Thursday, a stunning setback
that could spell its defeat for the year.
The vote was 45-50 against
limiting debate on the bill, 15 short of the 60 that the bill's supporters
needed to prevail. Most Republicans voted to block Democrats' efforts to bring
the bill to a final vote. "

CAN'T LET THEM ALL IN + CAN'T KEEP THEM ALL OUT + CAN'T SEND THEM ALL HOME + CAN'T COMPROMISE = POLITICAL FAILURE.

This bill was bad, lets get working on a new one.

Captain's Quarters: Turkish Incursion Into Iraq

"Several thousand Turkish troops crossed into northern Iraq early Wednesday to
chase Kurdish guerrillas who operate from bases there, Turkish security
officials told The Associated Press. "

This could turn into really bad news, for all the countries involved. Turkey stands to lose be getting into a deeper conflict with the Kurds in Iraq and Turkey, the Kurds are seeking more freedom. Inside Iraq, this could unsettle the balance of power between the Kurds, Shia's and Sunni's. While the Kurds are mostly in Iraq and Turkey, there is group of them inside Iran, which means that if unrest starts to spread across the region it could cause problems inside Iran as well.

If Iran starts to get drawn into a conflict with the Kurds inside its own country it could strengthen the ties it has with the Shia inside Iraq. That would increase the balance of power in their favor over the Sunni's which could draw Saudi Arabia into the mix.

Wikipedia has this to say about the Kurds. "The Kurds are an ethnic group who consider themselves to be indigenous to a region often referred to as Kurdistan, an area which includes adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Kurdish communities can also be found in Lebanon, Armenia, Azerbaijan".

How long will the chaos that was unleashed by this war echo across the region?

Captain's Quarters: Fred Moves Into Second

"Thompson, who just formed an exploratory committee and is the newest face in
the race, immediately moved into second place. With 17% support, he is within
six points of the frontrunner. That’s closer than anybody has been to Giuliani
in 20 consecutive weekly polls. Thompson is also competitive in a variety of
general election match-ups with potential Democratic nominees. "

While he is starting out strong, I still doubt that he has the long term strength to make it to the end.
