US loner helps bin Laden to taunt Bush - Telegraph:

US loner helps bin Laden to taunt Bush - Telegraph:

"The al-Qaeda leader's first video message for three years featured a bizarre
rant against America, with references to global warming, 'insane taxes', the US
mortgage market meltdown and rising interest rates. American spy chiefs were
quick to name Adam Gadahn, the head of al-Qaeda's English language media
operations, as the author of large sections of bin Laden's broadcast. Last
October, the 28-year-old 'loner' became the first American charged with treason
since 1952, for appearing in a succession of al-Qaeda videos under the guise of
'Azzam The American', in which he condemned globalisation and made American
cultural references."

The explains why so much of the video sounded like it was written by someone who pays attention to the media and has a clear understanding of American culture. I doubt that Bin Laden is able to get many channels in his cave. Besides the army would be quick to track it down to his Tora Bora hide out.

You don't have to be sorry when you are right. I think that it was a mistake in the last round of this violence that the Danish government came out and said that it was sorry. Chris Dodd pushes the energy envelope | Salon News

Chris Dodd pushes the energy envelope Salon News:

"Chris Dodd hasn't been out front on environmental issues during his 32
years in Congress, but he's clearly aiming to outgreen his competitors in the
2008 presidential campaign. He has earned props in environmental circles for
being the only candidate with the political cojones to call for a corporate
carbon tax as a way to fight global warming, and for endorsing a strict
fuel-economy standard that would require new cars and trucks to get 50 miles per
gallon by 2017. Dodd even ran what was billed as the first presidential
candidate ad focused on global warming. "

Carbon taxes make sense. It makes sense when discussing issues of Global Warming and other enviromental issues. A good carbon tax would be large enough to generate attention from the business community that it needs to clean up and engage in energy effiecentcy. It should be small enough that it is payable though, it should not be a tool that is going to drive business under or industry out of the country. A small tax could serve this purpose, the money from which should be used to develop cleaner and more energy efficient technology that could be sold to industry at competetive rates. Make the purchase of these new technologies deductable from the carbon tax that they are paying.

Talking Points Memo | Schwarzenegger's advice

Talking Points Memo Schwarzenegger's advice:

"'In movie terms, we are dying at the box office. We are not filling the seats,'
the California governor said. 'Now, while the number of California Republicans
has been declining, the number of independents has been growing. They may well
outnumber both political parties in just 20 years.' Schwarzenegger made the
comments in an address to the California Republican party state convention. 'The
real opportunity for Republicans is that independents generally agree with our
core principles,' he said. 'I want to make the Republican Party welcoming to
these Independents.'"

If the Republicans want to come back to power they have to kick out the moral authorities of the extreme right. People may share the values of conservative ideas, but fear the religious control in areas like abortion, birth control and gay rights. Socially this country is becoming more opened, more accepting and less dogmatic.

tinted glass covered the windows of almost every vehicle entering as Oprah
Winfrey welcomed 1,500 guests Saturday evening to her sprawling estate in what
was the biggest fundraiser of Sen. Barack Obama's political career."

In case you haven't heard Oprah threw a big shindig for Barack. Does this bring more votes for Obama, is there going to be a shift of power towards Obama because of the scandal that is growing around Clinton and Hsu. Is Obama going to gain from this star studded event.

law regulating Iraq’s oil industry. The Front was the last of several boycotting
groups to return to parliament, although the cabinet of Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki is still missing many of its members due to walkouts and
resignations."

One more step towards success, one more step of progress, one more small reason not to give up on the government of Iraq. The left used to say that the north could not be won, that we would never end the fighting there. Now the it is the south that the left is saying cannot be solved.

PoliPundit.com » Hsu scandal too big for NYT to ignore

PoliPundit.com » Hsu scandal too big for NYT to ignore:

"The records show that Components Ltd., a company controlled by Mr. Hsu
that has no obvious business purpose and appears to exist only on paper, has
paid a total of more than $100,000 to at least nine people who made campaign
contributions to Mrs. Clinton and others through Mr. Hsu. The payments occurred
in the spring of 2003, several months before Mr. Hsu emerged as a contributor to
Democrats and more than a year before he started bundling checks from those same
people for various campaigns. In all, he has raised more than $1 million for
Democrats. … Because [the records obtained by the NYT] covered only a single
month in 2003, it could not be determined if the pattern of payments to the nine
people was a singular occurrence, or continued closer in proximity to the
hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions that Mr. Hsu eventually
bundled."

This sounds like more of the same scandal that followed around the former Clinton administration for years. It could be attacks by partisan agents of the right, but it is hard to believe that where there is this much smoke there isn't fire. I don't think I can vote for Hilary unless she comes clean about this, in clear terms explains what she knew and when she knew it.

Gates of Vienna: Swedish Banks Urged to Adopt Shari’a

Gates of Vienna: Swedish Banks Urged to Adopt Shari’a:

"Stockholm’s local administration is actually lobbying for banks to
institute “Islamic banking,” i.e. Shari’a-compliant loans (Muslims should pay
less for loans than native Stockholmers — Jizyah, as it is called in the
Koran)."

They should have the right to have loans that are sold at special interest rates, loans are products and if someone wants to sell something for less than its value it shouldn't be illegal. That doesn't mean that banks should be forced into selling them, either main stream banks can sell them or they can set up their own banks to sell them. Any main stream bank would have to report to its share holders and explain to other customers why they are selling their loans undervalued to Muslims though.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Blogging the Qur’an: Sura 4, “Women,” verses 35-104:

"Then v. 43 tells believers not to come to prayers while drunk. Ibn Abi Hatim
says this was revealed because one of the Muslims began to recite sura 109:1-3:
“Say: O disbelievers! I do not worship that which you worship; nor do you
worship that which I worship.” But the leader of prayer was drunk, and so he
said: “Say, O disbelievers! I do not worship that which you worship, but we
worship that which you worship.” 4:43 was revealed shortly thereafter. It was
the first stage of the three-stage Qur’anic prohibition of alcohol. First Allah
commanded the Muslims not to pray while drunk in this passage; then he told them
that alcohol was a “great sin, and some profit, for men” (2:219); and finally
there came the revelation that alcohol was “Satan’s handiwork” (5:90), and thus
to be shunned altogether. The last of these verses is considered to have
abrogated the other two. Muhammad himself became quite stern about drunkenness,
saying that drunks should be given three chances and then executed: “If he is
intoxicated, flog him; again if he is intoxicated, flog him; again if he is
intoxicated, flog him; if he does it again a fourth time, kill him.” "

Can you imagine if we enforced this in the west, how many stars would have been killed? Lindsay would be on her last chance, looking at death if she got drunk again. One of the things that I respect about Islam is its approach to alcohol - no I don't think drinkers should be killed. Alcohol is a dangerous social ill, and Islam may be one of the first laws the saw that danger.

Richardson's Op-Ed in WaPo - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime:

"In the most recent debate, I asked the other candidates how many troops they

"PJM Groningen: Make no mistake: newly-elected conservative European leaders did

What does this shift in power in Europe mean for global power relationships, key among those relationships being the one between America and Europe. Europe may be embracing ideas that have a history of being promoted in America, but does that make them our friends. Does this mean that they have set aside their anti-American sentiment. Evangelicals waver on Thompson - USATODAY.com

Evangelicals waver on Thompson - USATODAY.com:

"In June, Thompson met privately with several Arlington Group members, many of
whom are uncomfortable with the GOP top tier for various reasons: Arizona Sen.
John McCain for championing campaign-finance overhaul and labeling some
evangelical figures 'agents of intolerance'; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani
for backing abortion rights and gay rights; and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt
Romney for his social-issue policy reversals and — for some members — his Mormon
faith."

We live in a very divided country right now. On one side are groups who want to push forward an acceptance of alternative lifestyles, ultimately making gay marriage legal. On the other are groups that are pushing conservative agendas that are anti-gay, anti-sexual health rights, including contraceptives and pro-life. It is at a time like this that more than ever we need a third party, not a party more to the left like the Green Party or more to the right like Libertarians but a party that represents the center.

Could a recession lie ahead? Watch the job market. | csmonitor.com

Could a recession lie ahead? Watch the job market. csmonitor.com:

"The latest snapshot of American employment showed the first monthly decline in
four years, but the worst part is this: The numbers suggest a steady weakening
of the job market, not just an August dive. Factories, home builders, and public
schools all saw big employment losses in August, yielding a net loss of 4,000
jobs for the nation. But what's more troubling than the negative tally,
economists say, is the breadth of deceleration. "

America is clearly headed towards some rough economic waters. Tighten down the hatches, start saving money if you can and be ready. The supply of jobs is going to shrink and income will fall over the next couple months.

ABC News: Missing Girl's Parents Return to England:

This is such a sad case no matter how you look at it, I would hope that the parents aren't involved, but we might never know. In a similar case, the killer of JonBenet has never been found. It is hard to pin something on a family member because the DNA and finger print evidence doesn't point to anything other than family contact, which could or could not have been related to a crime.

obviously not homophobic makes it even more significant. I’m sure it does not
cross David’s mind to talk like that in, say, Elton John’s company, but as a
reaction to an incident, I was fair game to be called a ‘poof.’ ” The charge
comes as Le Saux’s autobiography, “Graeme Le Saux: Left Field,” is about to hit

you. You’re a bit lost if you can’t sort yourself out.”"

I understand her logic, but that would be like suggesting that you don't need any help when you are lost in the wilderness. Yes, lots of people who get lost are able to find their own way out, but more people need the help of the search and rescue teams. I think that having an addiction is like being lost, you have to work to help yourself, but if you can get help, from someone who knows the way it is silly to not take it.
