Armenian Killings “Genocide” Says Foreign Affairs Cmt. | Air America Radio

Armenian Killings “Genocide” Says Foreign Affairs Cmt. Air America Radio:

"Despite warnings from Bush, the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs
Committee voted 27 to 21 on a resolution to recognize 'the systematic and
deliberate annihilation of 1.5 million Armenians as genocide.” Before the vote
Bush warned, “I urge members to oppose the Armenian genocide resolution now
being considered by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. We all deeply regret
the tragic suffering of the Armenian people that began in 1915. This resolution
is not the right response to these historic mass killings, and its passage would
do great harm to our relations with a key ally in NATO and in the global war on
terror. "

I don't suggest that politics should be more important than what is right, but it should be more important than empty gestures. This is like when people come forward with apologies for things that happened 500 years ago. Those who really suffered are dead, those alive today that are effected by the crimes probably don't feel that much better from this gesture. I don't know the facts around this case, and I could be wrong, but I think we should have stayed out of it.
