James Dobson Vetoes The Thompson Nomination - Oliver Willis

James Dobson Vetoes The Thompson Nomination - Oliver Willis:

"James Dobson, one of the nation's most politically influential evangelical
Christians, made it clear in a message to friends this week he will not support
Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson. In a private e-mail obtained
Wednesday by The Associated Press, Dobson accuses the former Tennessee senator
and actor of being weak on the campaign trail and wrong on issues dear to social
conservatives."

I'm not sure it is clear at this point who he is supporting. What is clear is that he is not supporting Thompson and he isn't supporting Giuliani. It is a hard place to be in, either support one of the lead candidates, or risk losing credibility by supporting someone that doesn't rank in the polls at all. If they move to support a candidate that ranks in the single digits in the polls, they will have shown their hand as being weak. They will lose standing politically. If they support a candidate that brings in a large number of voters, at the cost of compromise on their ideas, the base could revolt.
