Mike Gravel, born May 13, 1930, in Springfield, Massachusetts. U.S. Senator from Alaska from 1969 to 1981 and an active candidate for Vice President in 1972. He is most known for playing a key role in ending the draft during the Vietnam War through the release of the Pentagon Papers and through staging a one-man filibuster for 5 months. He is also notable for advocating a guaranteed annual income, which he termed a 'citizen's wage,' of $5,000 per person, regardless of whether the person worked. On April 13, 2006, Gravel announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination. His policy announcements to date include support for direct democracy, FairTax and withdrawal from Iraq. Mike Gravel filed with the FEC in April according to various news sources.[65][66] The FEC's site has listed his reports since July.

non-politician speaking at the first debate, a refreshing change from the
carefully crafted dodges and spin the other candidates made. But I’m not sure
what to make of some of his actions now. Gravel did not appear at the AFL-CIO
Democratic Candidate Debate last night, for which he was quick to accuse the
AFL-CIO of not inviting him, but later admitted that his campaign had not turned
in the necessary paperwork in time. He speaks with Contessa Brewer of MSNBC of
that and his refusal to be discouraged by his “third tier” contender status."

"Gravel has no interest in building support for one of his signature proposals, he thinks his policies shouldn't matter in our decision whether to support him or not, and he has no interest in arguing that he could get that legislation through Congress -- in other words, an effective president. So why the hell is he wasting our time on those debate stages? At least Kucinich pretends his agenda matters. Gravel won't even give us that courtesy."

While my first thought is that everyone is an important part of the debate, it is also true that it is pointless to bring up an idea and then dismiss it immediately. If you are going to stand for something, even if you know it is unpopular, you have to stand for it. Do you think that the US is ever going to pull out of NATO or the WTO? No, but do you see Kucinich talking about how his ideas are going to fail?

Gravel is serious unlike your trivial opinion about him and other people's perspectives of him (i.e. the video art piece with Gravel dropping a rock in the SF lake).

Please be respectful of someone who has your best interests as their inspiration and driving force. Gravel is fighting for our country's ultimate survival and revival. Without people like Gravel, fighting and taking action for truth, diversity, and unification of people in this country and around the world, we will end up falling further into a darkness that none of even WANT to imagine.

Thank you for your willingness to listen. I realize I am responding out of emotion but I feel I have brought simple truths to light.

First of all, thank you for your comment.

Second you are right that Gravel is a serious candidate, if you mean that he is a serious person who is running for the White House. Sadly if you mean he has a serious chance, I would have to disagree with you. I say this not as a slight against Gravel, the reality is that he is behind in the polls and I don't see him over coming Clinton or Obama for the nomination.

I heard him explain the ad, and the way he explained it shows that it was a metaphor and that it contained a lot of meaning. Sadly Americans aren't looking for metaphors, and they are not looking for a lot of meaning in a presidential candidate.

As for your response, it was perfectly logical and though you say it was done emotionally, it felt strong and thought out.

"For a few days there, Mike Gravel's race to become the Democratic presidential
nominee was in mortal danger. You see, Gravel wasn't invited to the upcoming
gay-issue presidential debate hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, and he was
hopping mad. HRC argued that the debate, initially, was only one hour long, and they wanted to limit it to serious candidates - as Gravel hadn't raised much money, he didn't
make the cut. A number of gay bloggers jumped in to the fray in Gravel's defense,
and the HRC relented (it didn't hurt that the debate is now 1.5 hours, giving more time for the major candidates to be pressed on their gay views)."

Common haven't you seen this guys campaign ad, he doesn't say much. Just make sure that the debate has a wishing pond for him to throw some coins in, wishing for the election is his best chance of winning, and he will be happy. Seriously though, I understand the concern about their being so many voices on the stage, but the candidates who feel like there are too many people running could make it so there were fewer. All they have to do is drop out of the race. To be honest, I think Gravel would be a great president, every once in a while he would have a press conference and throw rocks into the reflecting pond in the capital mall.
