I can actually see both sides of this argument. On the one hand, they did build their homes in the forest, where they had to have known about the fire danger. Did they take the steps that they should to secure their house or not. Did they think that tree that branched over the house was to beautiful to have removed. Also how much money do you spend on saving a house, assume the house is worth $100k, should you invest $500k to save it, it would be cheaper to let it burn and rebuild it.
The other side of course is that you are not talking about peoples houses, you are talking about peoples lives. That is understandable, though not entirely something that persuades me since I think that too much energy is invested in peoples things.
