Bill Richardson Pushes to Implement N.M.'s Medical Pot Law - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime

Bill Richardson Pushes to Implement N.M.'s Medical Pot Law - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime:

"I am writing to raise my deep concern about the White House Office of National
Drug Control Policy's misguided priority and wasted resources spent to
intimidate states trying to implement medical marijuana programs that provide
relief to citizens suffering from the pain of severe illness or injury. 'At a
time when the scourge of meth is coming across the border, and cocaine and
heroin use continues to ravage our communities, the federal government should be
cracking down on real criminals---not people who are trying to help those in
pain.'"

This is such an interesting issue. Because as conservatives, who are for states rights over the rights of the Federal Government, they should support Medical Marijuana, but they aren't. The concern seems to be that since it is a street drug that some people will use the prescription as an excuse to do drugs. That once you allow it to be used for medical purposes you lose control of how it is used in the general population. There are a couple problems with that.

One is that there is no control over the way pot is used in the general population. Imagine if you will a sweaty man, in a room full of mosquito's. He is swatting them, and sometimes he gets one, but more often than not he doesn't. Pot use is rampant in this country, I have been across the country a number of times and there really is no place that it isn't easily available.

The concern that it is going to be abused over looks the abuse of current prescription drugs. Pain killers are abused, should they not be sold to people who need it for their pain. I am not suggesting that you subscribe marijuana to someone as a substitute for Advil, but maybe as a substitute for morphine. Morphine is abused as a street drug, so it makes so sense to me to ban marijuana as a prescription drug over concerns of abuse.

I am not advocating drug use, the recreational use of drugs is something that is shameful in my opinion. What I am suggesting is a reasonable drug policy.
